Nothing was spared on June 9, 2026. Equities, crypto and commodities fell together in a broad, indiscriminate selloff that left few places to hide.

Everything sold off at once

The Nasdaq dropped 3.4% and the S&P 500 fell 2.1%, while the VIX, Wall Street's closely watched volatility gauge, jumped 16%. Bitcoin dropped below $61,500, sliding more than 4% on the day and pulling the total crypto market capitalisation down to $2.12 trillion. Bitcoin fell from around $64,100 to $61,600, triggering roughly $451 million in liquidations, with total cryptocurrency liquidations reaching about $1.1 billion over the prior 24 hours.
The usual defensive plays offered no shelter either. Gold and silver fell 1.95% and 5.56% respectively. With precious metals joining the rout, this was not a rotation into safety. It was a broad exit from risk.

A rates and liquidity signal, not a crypto story

The fact that stocks, crypto and metals fell in lockstep is the key tell. Sharp declines across multiple asset classes point to widespread risk aversion rather than anything specific to digital assets. When correlations collapse like this, the underlying driver is typically a tightening of financial conditions, either through rising rates expectations or a squeeze on liquidity.
The biggest catalyst in recent sessions was the latest U.S. jobs report, which showed the economy added 172,000 jobs in May, almost double Wall Street's expectations.Investors are currently focused less on economic growth and more on interest rates, and a strong labour market suggests the economy remains resilient, which increases the risk that inflation stays elevated. That dynamic raises the prospect of rates staying higher for longer, a headwind for every risk asset class simultaneously.
The Fear and Greed Index hit extreme fear levels as investors rushed for the exits, printing a reading of 14. Sentiment had deteriorated sharply in a matter of days. Only a week earlier the index had been near 52, a level that placed sentiment squarely in the Greed range, and the slide from Greed to Extreme Fear in seven days reflects how quickly the tone across digital asset markets can turn.
Until there is clarity on the rates outlook or a meaningful improvement in liquidity conditions, the correlation between traditional markets and crypto is likely to remain tight.
