<p><strong>Tether</strong><a href="https://yellow.com/asset/usdt" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">(USDT)</a> briefly overtook <strong>Ethereum</strong><a href="https://yellow.com/asset/eth" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">(ETH)</a> in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, though Ethereum has since reclaimed second place.</p>

<blockquote>
 <ul>
  <li>USDT slipped past Ethereum in market cap before Ethereum recovered the No. 2 ranking.</li>
  <li>Investors are pulling capital from risk assets and leaning on stablecoins for liquidity.</li>
  <li>Analysts say the shift feeds talk of a 2026 "stablecoin season."</li>
 </ul>

<h2 id="usdt-edges-past-ethereum">USDT Edges Past Ethereum</h2>
<p>Tether's market cap climbed to roughly $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, data <a href="https://blockonomi.com/tether-flips-ethereum-to-become-second-largest-by-market-cap-as-eth-drops-to-186-263b/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">showed</a>. The gap between the two assets fell below $1 billion.</p>
<p>The flip proved short-lived. Ethereum has since <a href="https://bitrss.com/usdt-nears-historic-flip-of-ethereum-as-market-cap-gap-shrinks-to-less-than-1-218408" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">recovered</a> the second spot, with its market cap back near $188 billion.</p>

<p>The reversal quickly <a href="https://en.coin-turk.com/tether-market-cap-hits-187-billion-overtakes-eth/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">drew</a> attention across the market, where traders have favored defensive positions during weeks of volatility.</p>
<p>Bitcoin critic <strong>Peter Schiff</strong><a href="https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/06/04/peter-schiff-says-usdt-market-cap-will-surpass-bitcoin-and-ethereum/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">predicted</a> that Tether's market cap would soon top Ethereum and eventually <strong>Bitcoin</strong><a href="https://yellow.com/asset/btc" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">(BTC)</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Mike McGlone</strong>, a senior strategist at <strong>Bloomberg</strong> Intelligence, has also <a href="https://blog.mexc.com/news/tether-flippening-bitcoin-ethereum-theory/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">argued</a> that capital is gravitating toward stability and utility, and that stablecoins remain attractive as a store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades.</p>
<h2 id="ethereum-market-cap-slide">Ethereum Market Cap Slide</h2>
<p>The backdrop is a broad retreat from risk. The stablecoin market has contracted by more than $7 billion in under 21 days, while investors have pulled about $400 billion from crypto.</p>
<p>Ethereum's total value locked has fallen to just $36 billion, a sign that on-chain activity is cooling alongside its price. Over recent weeks ETH/BTC stayed in a steady downtrend even as <a href="https://yellow.com/news/2017-altcoin-playbook-bitcoin-dominance-60" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin dominance</a> held near 60%, and Ethereum still anchors decentralized finance despite the slide.</p>
