Buterin Challenges the Dollar Peg

Ethereum co-founder @VitalikButerin has renewed debate over one of crypto's most fundamental assumptions: that stablecoins should track the US dollar. In a post on X, Buterin argued that what users actually want is not dollar stability but the preservation of purchasing power, and those two things are not the same.

His first concern was that most decentralized stablecoins still depend on the US dollar as their reference point. While he acknowledged that tracking the dollar makes sense in the short term, he argued that systems meant to be resilient to political or economic shocks should not be tied indefinitely to a single national currency.Over long time horizons, even moderate inflation could erode the usefulness of a dollar peg.

The scale of the problem is not small. CoinGecko data shows 95% of stablecoins are currently pegged to the USD.The stablecoin market has grown into a $311.5 billion market in 2026, up around 50% from the start of 2025. That dominance, in Buterin's view, represents a structural concentration of risk rather than a sign of health.

Personalized Baskets as an Alternative

Buterin suggested that future stablecoins might instead track broader price indexes or measures of purchasing power, rather than the dollar alone. He envisions stable-value instruments that are not pegged to a single fiat currency but instead track personalized baskets of value, allowing users to hold a token that maintains purchasing power relative to a custom mix of goods, services, or assets.

Instead of holding a dollar-pegged stablecoin, a user could hold a basket of positions tailored to their own life, with AI potentially tracking spending habits and automatically hedging against price increases on the things they actually consume. The concept shares some ground with CPI-style thinking. Conceptually, that could resemble Consumer Price Index basket thinking, where the cost of a representative set of everyday goods and services changes over time, or composite currency baskets such as the IMF's Special Drawing Rights, which derive value from a weighted mix of major fiat currencies.

Buterin did not present a finished model. He is not pretending the problem is solved and explicitly flagged rebalancing slippage as a significant practical challenge. Still, the proposal marks a broader push by the Ethereum co-founder toward what he describes as more resilient, long-term DeFi infrastructure, one that does not inherit the weaknesses of the fiat system it was designed to circumvent.
