This latest quantum processor builds upon last year’s original Majorana chip. The updated version increases qubit count to 12 from 8, while achieving a remarkable extension in qubit persistence—jumping from under 12 milliseconds to more than 20 seconds. This represents substantial progress in addressing decoherence, a persistent challenge in quantum computing.

Microsoft’s 2029 target aligns with IBM‘s roadmap. Last month, IBM announced a $10 billion quantum investment and established a specialized chip subsidiary with Trump administration backing.

Why Lead Matters

The transition to lead-based superconductors from aluminum marks the most significant technical shift. Lead atoms possess different quantum-scale properties due to their larger size. Microsoft credits AI-powered materials science for solving lead’s manufacturing challenges, particularly its water solubility that complicates chip production.

Jason Zander, Microsoft’s executive vice president leading quantum initiatives, identified this as the critical innovation. The company reports achieving 1,000-fold performance improvements on specific metrics. “The reason why people don’t use it to build chips is it requires an incredibly specialized process,” Zander explained. “We figured it out.”

The company’s quantum strategy hinges on Majorana quasiparticles—exotic quantum states that remained theoretical until Microsoft claimed their detection. This claim remains subject to scientific debate.

Scientific Scrutiny

Skepticism persists within the research community. Scientists like Henry Legg from the University of St. Andrews argue that Microsoft hasn’t provided adequate data for independent validation. The journal Science initiated a 2024 review of Microsoft’s 2020 quantum research data. Detractors contend similar transparency concerns affect recent publications.

Microsoft maintains that proprietary considerations limit public data disclosure, though the company has shared relevant results confidentially with DARPA, which is assessing various quantum methodologies.

“We’ve done enough of the physics to really have great data,” Zander stated.

GuruFocus assigns MSFT a GF Score of 97 out of 100, featuring perfect 10/10 marks across profitability, growth, and valuation categories. The current P/E ratio of 26.27x falls below the five-year median of 34.15x.

Insider transaction data from the last three months reveals zero purchases alongside $5.6 million in stock sales by company insiders.
