The Open Network has announced that its native cryptocurrency Toncoin is rebranding to Gram, reviving a name tied to the project's origins under Telegram founder Pavel Durov.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

TON is renaming its native token from Toncoin to Gram, a branding shift rather than a new asset launch.

The Gram name traces back to Telegram's original blockchain vision before regulatory obstacles forced a pivot.

Holders, exchanges, and wallet providers will need to watch for ticker and UI label updates across platforms.

What the Toncoin-to-Gram rebrand actually changes

The rebrand centers on naming and identity. Toncoin, the token that powers the TON blockchain, is adopting the Gram label. Based on available reporting, this is a branding and naming change rather than the creation of a separate token or a migration to a new contract.

For holders, the underlying asset and its blockchain infrastructure remain the same. The distinction matters because crypto rebrands have historically caused confusion when users mistake a name change for a token swap or chain fork.

The TON blockchain itself continues to operate under its existing architecture, as described in the project's technical whitepaper documentation. The rebrand is a front-facing change, not a protocol-level one.

Why TON may want the Gram name back

The name Gram carries significant recognition from Telegram's original blockchain effort. Durov's initial project used the Gram name before the SEC intervened in 2020, halting the token sale. Reviving it signals a deliberate reconnection to that earlier identity and its built-in awareness among Telegram's user base.

Branding and ecosystem positioning

A shorter, more distinctive name can simplify marketing across Telegram's 900-million-plus user ecosystem. "Gram" is easier to integrate into conversational UI, bot commands, and payment prompts than "Toncoin."

The move also differentiates the token from the network name itself. TON refers to the blockchain; Gram would refer specifically to the currency, reducing ambiguity in developer documentation and user-facing products.

What is confirmed versus interpreted

The confirmed fact is narrow: TON has announced the Toncoin-to-Gram rebrand. The strategic motivations discussed above, including ecosystem simplification and legacy branding, are interpretive. No official statement detailing the full rationale has been verified in the available research.

What holders, traders, and platforms should watch next

Crypto rebrands create a predictable checklist of downstream changes. Exchanges, wallets, and data aggregators all need to update independently, and that process rarely happens simultaneously.

Exchange and ticker updates

Major exchanges will need to update the trading pair label. Whether the ticker symbol changes from TON to GRAM or retains its current form is not yet confirmed. Traders should monitor official announcements from their platforms before assuming any pair has been renamed. Similar exchange-level adjustments were visible when Binance expanded its product offerings for non-US users, requiring updated listing labels across the platform.

Wallet and interface changes

Wallet providers, including Telegram's native wallet, will likely update display names and icons. Users should verify that any wallet update referencing "Gram" comes from an official source to avoid phishing attempts that exploit rebrand confusion.

Documentation and developer tooling

The TON developer ecosystem includes SDKs, API references, and smart contract libraries that currently reference "Toncoin." A full rebrand requires updating these materials, and the rollout timeline has not been specified.

Until exchanges, block explorers, and the TON Foundation's own documentation reflect the new name uniformly, holders should treat any platform still showing "Toncoin" as simply behind on the update, not as evidence of a separate asset.
