Change

Losing a spot in the ranking of the largest cryptos is never trivial. In the first quarter of 2026, XRP gave way to BNB, a symbolic setback reflecting recent difficulties of Ripple’s token in the market. Yet behind this visible underperformance, institutional investors continue to inject capital. While the price struggles to convince, several indicators show growing interest from professional players in the asset.

XRP loses ground to BNB in the crypto hierarchy

The first quarter of 2026 was a turning point for XRP. After several years among the most valued assets in the market, the token slipped behind BNB in the market cap rankings, while XRP ETFs continue to attract capital. This development occurs within a broader crypto market correction context that affected many major assets.

Indeed, XRP ended the quarter behind Binance’s token as its valuation declined due to a less favorable environment for risk assets. This drop came as investors closely monitored XRP’s ability to maintain its place among the top cryptocurrencies in the market.

This loss of position reflects several trends observed during the quarter :

A decline in XRP valuation amid a crypto market correction context ;

BNB’s return ahead of XRP in the leading market cap rankings ;

Weakening momentum observed on XRP compared to some direct competitors ;

Increased investor attention on the token’s ability to regain the momentum of previous months.

Beyond the simple ranking, this setback mainly indicates the caution that has settled in the short-term market. However, the reading offered by market caps does not capture all dynamics at work around XRP, notably those developing on the side of institutional investors.

Institutional investors continue to bet on Ripple’s crypto

Behind the weak price performance, several indicators reveal sustained institutional activity. CME’s XRP futures recorded nearly $13 billion in notional volume during the first quarter of 2026. Such an activity level indicates that professional players continue to pay close attention to the asset despite its relative underperformance in the spot market. This dynamic strongly contrasts with the market cap ranking developments over the same period.

This trend is also reflected in investment flows related to XRP products. While some crypto market segments experienced capital outflows, investment vehicles exposed to Ripple’s crypto continued to attract funds. This divergence between institutional investor behavior and the broader market supports the idea that some players view the current crypto weakness as a transitional phase rather than a structural change in trajectory.

The XRP situation thus illustrates the gap that can sometimes exist between the visible performance of an asset and the long-term expectations of professional investors. The slip behind BNB constitutes an immediate weakness signal, but the volumes observed in institutional markets offer another perspective. The coming quarters will determine whether this persistent confidence from institutional players results in a strong comeback of XRP in the crypto hierarchy or if BNB will sustainably consolidate its lead.
