Coinbase Layer 2 network, Base, just got a major upgrade. The Azul update is now live on mainnet. It's Base's first self-built network upgrade. And it could change how fast you move your crypto — and how safely. But here's the question every investor should be asking right now: What does a $4.4 billion TVL network upgrading itself actually mean for you?

What Is the Azul Upgrade, Exactly?

Azul is Base's first independent mainnet upgrade. It was built entirely by the Base team — not borrowed from another network. The upgrade focuses on three things: speed, security, and a better experience for developers.
The centerpiece is something called Multiproof. Think of it as a double-lock security system. It combines two different proof methods to verify transactions. One method is called TEE — Trusted Execution Environment. The other is ZK, short for zero-knowledge proofs.
"When both proofs agree, your withdrawal goes through in as little as one day — not a week."
If the two proofs ever conflict, ZK wins. Zero-knowledge proofs are the stricter, more trusted standard. That design choice puts security first, always.

Why Empty Blocks Mattered and Why They Don't Anymore?

Empty blocks are wasted space on a blockchain. They slow things down and waste network capacity. Before Azul, Base had too many of them. The new client architecture cuts that by roughly 99%.
That's not a small tweak. It's a near-complete fix. Every block that's full of real transactions makes the network more efficient for you.
A faster network means lower wait times, cheaper fees, and smoother DeFi trades.
Coinbase Base also now supports sustained peak loads of 5,000 transactions per second. That's not a one-time test. The team says the architecture has handled multiple 5,000 TPS bursts. For a DeFi platform with $4.4 billion locked in, that kind of capacity matters.

What This Means for Withdrawals?

Withdrawals from Layer 2 networks to the Ethereum mainnet used to take days or even a week. With Azul's Multiproof system, here's what changes:

TEE and ZK proofs confirm your transaction together

When both agree, withdrawal completes in as little as one day

If they disagree, ZK overrides TEE — protecting your funds

The system aligns with Ethereum's Osaka spec through multiple EIPs

For everyday users, this is the most tangible win. You don't need to understand the math behind zero-knowledge proofs. You just need to know your money moves faster and more safely.

Coinbase May 2026 Deals: Real Offers, Real Deadlines

Alongside the Azul news, Coinbase also ran a wave of limited offers — all ending May 31, 2026. If you missed them, here's what was on the table:

20% off the first year of a Coinbase One annual subscription

A share of $1,000,000 in Bitcoin via a 14-day activity streak

3% transfer bonus on eligible inflows — with a 36-month lock-up for the full amount

40% staking reward boost on newly staked assets for Coinbase One members

The Bitcoin prize carried specific rules. You needed to complete at least one $25+ trade on 14 separate days. The first person to hit a 14-day streak could win a World Football Finals package. Regional restrictions applied on staking boosts.
These promotions weren't random. They signal Coinbase's push to grow subscriptions, increase platform activity, and lock in long-term users — right as Base's biggest upgrade went live.

Is Base Ready to Be the Home of Global Finance?

That's the claim Base made with Azul. "The home of global finance" is a bold phrase. But the numbers back up at least part of it. A $4.4 billion TVL isn't a small project. A 99% reduction in empty blocks isn't marketing spin.
Stage 2 decentralization is the goal that Azul moves toward. In blockchain terms, Stage 2 means the network doesn't rely on a central team to validate transactions. Multiproof is a key step in that direction.
Base also aligned the upgrade with Ethereum's Osaka spec — the latest planned Ethereum update. That keeps Base tightly connected to its parent chain. For investors, that's a positive signal for long-term stability.

The Bottom Line

Base Azul is live. It's faster, more secure, and built to scale. Withdrawals are quicker. Empty blocks are gone. And with $4.4 billion already locked in, the stakes are real. The exchange isn't just maintaining Base — it's building toward something much bigger. Watch how Stage 2 decentralization unfolds from here.
