President Donald Trump

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes each day, has become the dominant macro trigger for crypto markets, and the latest round of diplomatic turbulence sent Bitcoin sharply lower.
Trump declared on May 27 that neither Iran nor Oman will be permitted to control the Strait of Hormuz. The statement contradicted earlier signals from Washington that a deal was close. President Donald Trump had announced on May 23 that a deal with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz had been "largely negotiated," with a formal announcement expected soon. His subsequent denial of any agreed framework pulled the rug from under markets that had been pricing in de-escalation.

$270 Million in Liquidations Within One Hour

The denial triggered an immediate and severe market reaction. Crypto liquidations crossed $270 million within just one hour after $BTC fell below $73,500. Long traders bore the brunt of the move, accounting for nearly $264 million of total liquidations as volatility surged across the market. Liquidation cascades compounded the initial selloff as forced selling pushed prices lower, triggering further liquidations in a self-reinforcing cycle.
Bitcoin has experienced notable price volatility as the strait situation has developed, climbing when diplomatic progress appeared to be made and dipping when tensions escalated.

Military Strikes Add to Market Unease

Compounding the diplomatic breakdown, reports emerged of new US military action in the region. The US military carried out new strikes targeting an Iranian drone operation that posed a threat to its forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, hours after Trump dismissed an Iranian report of a deal to restore traffic through the strategic waterway.A US official said the military shot down four Iranian attack drones and struck a ground control station in the port city of Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone. Iran condemned the attacks as a violation of the ceasefire, and the IRGC warned it will retaliate against any violations.
The tensions between Washington and Tehran revolve around two main pressure points: control of the Strait of Hormuz and stalled nuclear negotiations. Sticking points include Iran's stockpile of roughly 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, control of the strait, phased sanctions relief, and the broader question of whether Tehran will accept long-term limits on its nuclear program. Any escalation threatens oil supply chains, which ripples into inflation expectations, US Treasury yields, and risk appetite across every asset class.
For crypto traders, the broader message from recent weeks is clear: the Hormuz standoff has become a live macro variable, and Bitcoin is trading as a sensitive barometer of geopolitical risk. Until a durable agreement is reached or the military situation stabilises, sharp swings in either direction remain the baseline.
