The largest consensus overhaul in Solana's history is no longer theoretical. It is running on live validator infrastructure.
Alpenglow, the protocol upgrade that replaces both Proof of History and TowerBFT, went live on a community test cluster on May 11, according to Anza, the Solana Labs spinout leading the upgrade's development. External validator operators are now joining the cluster and testing how the new system behaves under real-world conditions.
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said at Consensus Miami 2026 that Alpenglow could reach mainnet as soon as next quarter if testing continues smoothly. That would put a potential mainnet launch in Q3 2026.

Why this matters

To understand why Alpenglow is significant, you have to understand what it replaces.
Solana's current consensus runs on two interconnected systems. Proof of History is a cryptographic clock that timestamps transactions before they reach consensus, so validators do not have to argue over ordering. TowerBFT is the voting mechanism that validators use to agree on the state of the chain. Together, they give Solana its speed, with block times of roughly 400 milliseconds.
But finality, the point at which a transaction is fully confirmed and irreversible, takes much longer. TowerBFT requires 32 rounds of voting to reach economic finality. That process currently takes approximately 12.8 seconds.
That is fast compared to Ethereum's 12-second block times or Bitcoin's 10-minute intervals. But it is not fast enough for the kinds of applications Solana wants to support: real-time payments, high-frequency DeFi, gaming, and social tools that need transactions to feel instant.
Alpenglow targets finality of 100 to 150 milliseconds. That is roughly 80 to 100 times faster than the current system.

How it works

Alpenglow replaces Solana's existing stack with two new components.
The first is Votor, a new voting protocol that handles block finalization. Instead of the current 32-round voting process, Votor collapses consensus into one or two rounds. When 80% of validator stake is online, finality is achieved in a single round at around 100 milliseconds. At 60% stake participation, it takes two rounds, targeting 150 milliseconds. Both modes run concurrently, so the network always finalizes on the faster path available.
A key design choice: Votor moves the entire voting process off-chain. Instead of validators casting votes as on-chain transactions that take up block space, Votor uses direct messaging and signature aggregation to reach consensus without occupying any block capacity at all.
The second component is Rotor, a data relay protocol that replaces Turbine, Solana's current mechanism for broadcasting transaction data across the network. Rotor uses stake-weighted relays, erasure coding, and fewer hops between nodes to push data around the network more efficiently. This is critical for keeping block times fast without relying on centralized bottlenecks.
The upgrade also introduces a fixed 400-millisecond block time with local timeouts tolerating up to 5% clock drift, according to the Alpenglow whitepaper.

The road to mainnet

Anza proposed the upgrade in May 2025. By September, Solana validators had voted overwhelmingly in favor: 98.27% of participating stakers approved the proposal under SIMD-0236, with only 1.05% voting against and 0.36% abstaining. Roughly 52% of the network's total stake participated in the vote.
The community test cluster that went live on May 11 is one of the final steps before mainnet activation. Validators are now testing what developers are calling the "Alpenswitch," the process of transitioning live validator nodes from TowerBFT to Alpenglow in a running network environment. Early results suggest up to a 100x reduction in time to finality.
Yakovenko described the target performance as approaching the physical limits of how fast information can travel. "Near the speed of light around the globe," he said at Consensus.

What this means for Solana

If Alpenglow reaches mainnet, it changes what is possible on Solana at a fundamental level.
Finality in under 150 milliseconds would make Solana faster than most centralized payment rails. For context, a typical Visa authorization takes between 1 and 3 seconds. A wire transfer takes hours or days. Alpenglow would put Solana's confirmation speed in the range of what traditional infrastructure delivers for low-latency electronic trading, not consumer payments.
That opens the door to applications that have never been viable on a public blockchain, real-time order books with sub-second settlement, on-chain gaming with no perceptible lag, and tokenized financial products that settle as fast as they trade.
It also has implications for MEV, the practice of validators extracting value by reordering transactions. Yakovenko noted at Consensus that Alpenglow's faster finality fundamentally changes MEV economics, because the window for profitable reordering shrinks dramatically when blocks finalize in milliseconds rather than seconds.
This is more than a performance upgrade. Proof of History was Solana's signature innovation, the thing that made it different from every other Layer 1. Replacing it signals a level of technical ambition, and confidence, that few blockchain projects have demonstrated. Whether it works as designed on mainnet is the only question left.

Solana's biggest upgrade in history is now live for testing. Here's what Alpenglow actually changes.
