In a captivating personal account, a user named Cprkrn shared on social media how he managed to retrieve the password to his missing cryptocurrency wallet, thanks to Claude, a sophisticated AI chatbot. It was on May 13, 2026, that Cprkrn expressed his joy at regaining access to his valuable coins, also tagging Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei in a lighthearted social media post.

What led to years of Bitcoin hiding?

During his college days, Cprkrn invested in Bitcoin at a price of $250 per coin. Seeking to protect his digital wealth, he altered his wallet’s password, only to forget the new key. This mistake left him estranged from his wallet, which now holds Bitcoin valued at nearly $398,000. Despite his extensive efforts over the years, including utilizing various open-source password recovery programs like BTCRecover and Hashcat, the password remained elusive.

How did Claude AI play a role?

As a final attempt to unlock his funds, Cprkrn resorted to Claude AI, uploading a collection of files from an old computer. Rather than employing sheer force to guess the password, Claude took an innovative approach. The AI pinpointed a forgotten wallet.dat file, a vital component for Bitcoin transactions. Alongside, it matched a mnemonic phrase noted by Cprkrn, which acted as a master key, eventually paving the path to the wallet’s lost password.

Recalling the breakthrough moment, Cprkrn said, “It found an old wallet file and using the mnemonic, we finally cracked it. I was locked out for 11 years because of confusion and changing the password. In the end, the problem was solved in the simplest way possible.”

Screenshots shared by Cprkrn disclosed the AI’s command-line processing steps during recovery. The images depicted Claude’s capability to analyze BTCRecover’s algorithm and deduce the correct combination, eventually displaying the victorious message of “PRIVATE KEYS DECRYPTED!,” signifying the release of 5 BTC, close to $400,000.

Public response and misconceptions

While some online voices exaggerated by suggesting Claude AI had broken Bitcoin encryption, a recovery expert clarified this notion was misleading. The AI simply utilized the existing data efficiently to resolve the issue, rather than breaching sophisticated security measures.

The incident generated widespread interest on social media, with discussions flourishing on Reddit. Users humorously noted the irony of the situation, as the solution lay hidden in plain sight, while others, like “irritatedellipses,” highlighted the necessity of technical knowledge to recognize vital files and phrases.

“Many might think searching for an old wallet file and a mnemonic is common sense, but you have to know what you’re looking for. You need to understand what wallets store, how files are backed up, and more technical details,” commented “irritatedellipses.”

Though skeptics raised doubts about the story’s credibility, or reminisced over their own lost assets, this narrative showcases AI technology’s expanding potential, revealing promising avenues for cryptocurrency recovery.
