Three Signals, One Direction, One Important Caveat

Three independent datasets are describing early-stage altcoin rotation simultaneously in May 2026.

The 90-day AltSeason Index from CryptoQuant has risen rapidly to 28.6. The index sits just above the Bitcoin Season floor of 20 and is moving higher. Altcoins’ share of combined BTC and ETH trading volume on Binance has climbed from 31% to 49%, approaching parity with the two largest assets combined. The CEX Volume Ratio chart, which measures altcoin volume excluding the top five assets against the top five, shows an altcoin volume increasing trend active in 2026.

All three point in the same direction. None of them point at alt season.

The AltSeason Index needs to reach 75 before it enters alt season territory. At 28.6 it has 47 points to travel. The distance between where the index is and where alt season begins is larger than the distance the index has traveled from the Bitcoin Season floor. The rotation has started. It has not arrived.

The Cycle That Never Had a Real Alt Season

The historical context of the AltSeason Index chart reveals a specific anomaly about the current cycle. Prior alt seasons, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, all produced index readings at or near 75-100, the grey zone on the chart. The 2021 peak reached near 95. The 2022 episode reached near 90.

The current cycle peaked in early 2024 at a reading that remained well below 75. Per CW8900’s analysis of the CryptoQuant data, there was no real alt season in this cycle. The highest point the index reached was modest by historical standards, suggesting that capital rotated into altcoins briefly but never reached the depth and duration that characterizes a genuine alt season.

That observation changes how to read the current 28.6 reading. In a normal cycle, a reading of 28.6 rising from the Bitcoin Season zone would suggest early alt season positioning. In a cycle that never reached alt season territory at its prior peak, the same reading could mean the index is beginning a rotation that finally completes what the 2024 peak failed to deliver, or it could mean the index is repeating the same pattern of rising briefly before failing to reach the threshold again.

The current reading does not resolve that ambiguity. It raises it.

Volume Data Confirms Rotation, Not Destination

The CEX Volume Ratio chart shows altcoin volume excluding BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, and BNB is in an increasing trend relative to the top five assets in 2026. Yellow bars indicating altcoin volume increasing trend are visible on the chart. The ratio itself is rising from historically low levels.

The Binance altcoin volume share climbing from 31% to 49% is the most concrete data point. When altcoins account for nearly half of Binance’s combined BTC and ETH trading volume, money is actively moving into the broader altcoin market. That is rotation in measurable terms.

But the 2021 peak context frames the current level precisely. In 2021, the CEX Volume Ratio reached above 2.0, altcoin volume more than doubled the top five combined. The current ratio sits at approximately 0.3-0.4, based on the current chart reading. Rotation is happening at approximately 15-20% of the scale that characterized the last genuine alt season. The direction is correct. The magnitude is not yet comparable.

What 28.6 Actually Means

The AltSeason Index at 28.6 is the clearest single-number summary of where the market sits. It is above the Bitcoin Season floor of 20: Bitcoin dominance is no longer the only story. It is 47 points below the alt season threshold of 75: the rotation has not reached the scale that generates the broad altcoin gains associated with alt season.

The confirmation signal is the AltSeason Index crossing 50 while the CEX Volume Ratio continues rising and altcoin share of Binance volume holds above 45%. That combination would confirm the rotation is deepening rather than reversing at the first resistance level.

The denial signal is the AltSeason Index falling back below 20 while the CEX Volume Ratio reverts and Binance altcoin volume share drops back toward 31%. That outcome would confirm the current readings are a temporary rotation within a Bitcoin-dominant cycle rather than the beginning of a genuine alt season transition.

The rotation is real. The alt season is not here yet. The index has 47 points to cover before those two statements change.
