The race to prepare blockchains for future security risks has intensified after new developments in quantum computing surfaced. A recent research note from Grayscale highlights how the timeline for quantum threats is tightening faster than expected. This shift has placed networks like XRP Ledger and Solana into focus as early movers adapting to potential risks.
According to Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl, a new study from Google Quantum AI signals meaningful progress in quantum capabilities. Consequently, concerns about the long-term safety of traditional cryptographic systems have gained urgency.
Moreover, Pandl emphasized that public blockchains must begin strengthening their defenses immediately. He pointed out that some networks have already started experimenting with post-quantum cryptography solutions. XRP Ledger and Solana stand out in this transition due to their early testing efforts.
Additionally, Ripple’s Head of Research, Aanchal Malhotra, addressed the implications of this development. She noted that Google validated its findings using a zero-knowledge proof instead of releasing the full method. As a result, parts of quantum progress are no longer fully visible to the public.

The research suggests that the timeline for quantum computers breaking classical encryption is shrinking. Previously, experts believed such risks remained far in the future. However, new estimates indicate that fewer resources may be required to achieve that milestone.
Notably, recent findings suggest that under 500,000 physical qubits could solve complex cryptographic problems. This marks a significant reduction compared to earlier projections. Consequently, the industry now faces a clearer timeline for potential disruption.
Furthermore, Google Quantum AI has indicated a possible deadline around 2029 for a meaningful quantum impact. This timeline aligns closely with earlier statements from Ripple’s leadership regarding preparedness windows.
Ripple CTO David Schwartz had previously acknowledged that XRP Ledger was not inherently quantum-resistant. However, he also stated that upgrades could be implemented when risks became more immediate. At the time, he believed the threat remained distant, yet current developments suggest otherwise.
Meanwhile, Malhotra clarified that no immediate risk exists for wallet security today. However, she stressed that the pace of progress is accelerating beyond industry expectations. This trend has increased pressure on blockchain developers to act sooner rather than later.

Additionally, the broader crypto ecosystem now faces a strategic decision regarding migration to quantum-resistant systems. Networks that delay adaptation may face greater challenges once the technology matures further.
In conclusion, the recognition of XRP Ledger and Solana reflects a growing emphasis on proactive security measures. As quantum research advances, early experimentation may provide a significant advantage in safeguarding blockchain infrastructure.
