Dollar

2024

Rally

The dollar takes the initiative and sets its pace for the markets. In March, it recorded its best monthly performance since December 2024 supported by geopolitical tensions and an adjustment of expectations on U.S. monetary policy. This move caught part of Wall Street off guard and forced investors to review their positions. In the foreign exchange market, the balance shifts quickly, with repercussions already extending beyond Forex.

This rise is explained by geopolitical tensions and a change in expectations on U.S. monetary policy.

Investors turn to the dollar, strengthening its role as a safe haven.

Wall Street strategies in the currency market are under pressure and must be adjusted quickly.

The greenback is heading toward its best monthly performance in over a year, with an increase of more than 2 % of the Bloomberg Dollar Spot index in March. This rise occurs in a context of international tensions that mechanically strengthen the appeal of safe-haven assets. According to data, the dollar is “on track for its best month since December 2024”, a move reflecting increased demand for protection amid uncertainty.

At the same time, expectations related to U.S. monetary policy evolve. Investors now adjust their projections regarding the Federal Reserve, incorporating a slower pace of rate cuts than expected. This change in perception contributes directly to supporting the dollar by strengthening its relative yield versus other currencies and modifying capital flows worldwide.

Increased demand for safe-haven assets in a tense geopolitical climate ;

A revision of expectations regarding U.S. monetary policy ;

A rapid repositioning of investors facing a reassessed macroeconomic scenario.

Strategies built on a weakening dollar find themselves weakened, leading to rapid position adjustments. The simultaneous strengthening of flows toward the greenback increases pressure on other currencies and contributes to a rise in volatility in the foreign exchange market.

Wall Street forced to review its Forex roadmap

This dollar rebound is not limited to a temporary fluctuation. It directly modifies the projections of major financial institutions. Trading desks must now operate in a different environment, where the greenback’s trajectory no longer corresponds to the dominant scenarios from earlier in the year. Thus, this rise“disrupts Wall Street’s FX roadmap”, reflecting a misalignment between expectations and market reality.

This change requires a global reshuffling of arbitrages. Assets dependent on loose financial conditions could see their momentum slow, while the dollar regains a central position in allocation strategies. This situation accentuates the gaps between regions and asset classes, in a context where liquidity becomes more selective.

The rise of the dollar comes as the BRICS bloc seeks to reduce its dependence on the greenback, increasing monetary tensions and geopolitical reshuffles.

In the long term, this development opens several perspectives. If international tensions persist and monetary expectations continue to evolve in this direction, the dollar could extend its dominance phase. Such a scenario would redefine global financial balances and force investors, including in the crypto ecosystem, to adjust their strategies in the face of a more demanding monetary environment.
