Morgan Stanley has taken another step toward expanding its digital asset capabilities by filing for a national trust bank charter that would allow the firm to custody cryptocurrencies and provide related services for clients in the United States.
The proposed charter, which would be overseen by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), would enable Morgan Stanley to directly hold digital assets such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on behalf of institutional and wealth management clients.
A national trust bank charter allows financial institutions to offer fiduciary services, including asset custody, while operating under federal regulatory supervision.
The move signals growing institutional confidence in cryptocurrencies and reflects increasing demand from investors seeking secure and regulated ways to access digital assets. Morgan Stanley, which manages roughly $9 trillion in client assets, has already provided indirect exposure to crypto through exchange-traded funds and other investment vehicles.
However, obtaining a trust charter would allow the firm to expand into direct custody, a key component of institutional crypto infrastructure.
Crypto custody is considered a critical service as institutional investors require secure storage solutions that meet regulatory and compliance standards. By offering custody directly, Morgan Stanley would be able to strengthen its digital asset offerings and compete with other major financial institutions that have entered the space.
Several large firms, including Bank of New York Mellon and Fidelity Investments, have already launched crypto custody services, highlighting a broader shift among traditional financial players toward integrating blockchain-based assets into their core operations.
The filing also reflects a broader trend of regulatory engagement between traditional financial institutions and U.S. authorities as digital assets become more mainstream. A trust charter provides a clear regulatory framework, helping institutions operate crypto services while maintaining compliance with federal standards.
If approved, the charter would position Morgan Stanley to play a larger role in the digital asset ecosystem, offering clients secure custody and expanded crypto services as institutional adoption continues to accelerate worldwide.
