The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has introduced a new long-term protocol planning document called the “Strawmap,” outlining a proposed series of Ethereum network upgrades stretching through 2029.

Published by EF researcher Justin Drake and the protocol team, the Strawmap sketches roughly seven planned hard forks over the next four years, assuming a cadence of one upgrade every six months.
The document is described as a “strawman roadmap,” meaning it is not an official commitment but a coordination tool designed to guide discussion among Ethereum developers, researchers, and governance participants.
It provides a unified visual framework for understanding how Layer-1 (L1), data and execution-layer improvements could evolve together over time.
At its core, the Strawmap sets out five long-term technical objectives, referred to as “north stars.” These include achieving faster L1 transaction finality within seconds, scaling throughput to 1 gigagas per second, roughly equivalent to 10,000 transactions per second, and enabling high-throughput Layer-2 networks capable of processing up to 10 million transactions per second using data availability sampling.
The roadmap also highlights future adoption of post-quantum cryptography to ensure long-term security against quantum computing threats, along with native privacy features allowing shielded ETH transfers directly on the base layer.
The Strawmap originated as a discussion starter during an Ethereum Foundation workshop in January 2026.
According to the EF, the goal was to create a holistic, longer-term perspective that extends beyond the shorter timelines typically addressed by the All Core Developers process.
The document organizes upgrades across consensus, data, and execution layers, identifying major “headliner” improvements for each fork.
Upcoming forks include named upgrades such as Glamsterdam and Hegotá, alongside placeholder-named future releases.
The EF emphasized that timelines remain tentative and could change based on research progress, governance consensus, and technological breakthroughs, including AI-assisted development.
Importantly, the foundation stressed that the Strawmap is not a prediction but a flexible planning framework intended to accelerate coordination and innovation.
The roadmap is expected to evolve continuously, with regular updates incorporating community feedback and ongoing research developments across the Ethereum ecosystem.
