Smart contracts and applications built on the Ethereum blockchain have brought about the need for creating tokens according to specific technical frameworks. As a result, standards such as ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-6551 have emerged. Each of these protocols empowers a range of platforms, from decentralized finance (DeFi) and gaming to NFTs and digital identity solutions, enabling Ethereum’s ecosystem to support an extraordinary spectrum of use cases.

Understanding Fungible and Non-Fungible Tokens

In the Ethereum universe, tokens fall into two basic categories: fungible and non-fungible assets. With fungible tokens, every unit is interchangeable with another of the same value and characteristics, making them ideally suited for digital currencies like USDC or DAI. By contrast, non-fungible tokens represent unique assets distinguishable from one another—a quality best illustrated by NFTs, which track collectibles, art, or in-game items individually.

ERC-20: Ethereum’s Foundational Standard

Introduced in 2015, the ERC-20 standard set forth clear technical guidelines for issuing and transferring fungible tokens on Ethereum. Today, major digital assets such as Chainlink, Uniswap, and USDC all rely on this framework. Because wallets, exchanges, and DeFi protocols can easily recognize and integrate ERC-20 tokens, this standard has helped foster a cohesive and predictable ecosystem.

ERC-721 Pioneers the NFT Era

The release of ERC-721 in 2018 marked the dawn of NFTs by creating the first widely adopted standard for registering unique digital items on the blockchain. Iconic NFT collections like CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club were made possible by ERC-721, which facilitates the storage of distinct metadata with each token. This capability drives the popularity of ERC-721 in fields such as digital art, collectibles, and in-game asset tracking.

ERC-6551 Gives NFTs Asset Ownership Powers

Among the most recent developments is the ERC-6551 standard, which introduces groundbreaking new functions to the NFT space. Commonly referred to as “Token Bound Accounts,” ERC-6551 enables NFTs themselves to act as independent wallet identities on Ethereum, allowing them to hold other tokens or NFTs within their structure. This innovation unlocks new possibilities—such as gaming characters storing inventory, or advancing novel solutions in digital identity.

Although the full range of ERC-6551’s potential applications is just starting to emerge, many believe it promises to expand the horizons of NFTs going forward.

Where Token Standards Make a Difference

Within DeFi, ERC-20 is a fixture across numerous projects—from digital currencies to governance tokens. While ERC-721 dominates NFT marketplaces and collectible platforms, ERC-1155 and ERC-6551 are being adopted in gaming applications to manage diverse digital assets and equipment side by side. The potential for ERC-6551 to play a key role in digital identity solutions is also attracting significant attention.

Collectively, these standards ensure that diverse applications on Ethereum can interact fluently and reliably. By providing a shared technical language, they serve as vital building blocks for security and compatibility throughout the network.
