Acurast

<p>Blockchains offer decentralized value transfer, ownership, and coordination, but many of the foundations that support Web3 applications today still rely on centralized cloud providers.</p><p>The majority of compute still relies on infrastructure controlled by a small number of companies, including the vast majority of artificial intelligence (AI) processes, as well as bots and automations that interact with data oracles.</p><p>Acurast exists to change that. It allows developers to run code — such as automations, AI agents, and backend logic — on a permissionless network of mobile devices. One of the key innovations here is that these workloads run in <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/trusted-execution-environments-tees" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">trusted execution environments (TEEs)</a> on smartphones.</p><p>TEEs are secure hardware enclaves that isolate code execution from the rest of the device, protecting it from tampering and unauthorized access. This means developers can trust that their code executed correctly, even though it ran on someone else’s phone.</p><p>Participants in the network who contribute their phones provide compute power and are rewarded accordingly.</p><p>In essence, Acurast turns unused smartphone capacity into a global decentralized cloud.</p><h2 id="the-core-problem-compute-is-still-centralized">The Core Problem: Compute Is Still Centralized</h2><p>While blockchains have removed middlemen from value transfer, compute remains a significant point of centralization. Most applications, including the majority of Web3 apps, rely on centralized infrastructure for tasks that can’t be executed directly on a blockchain, which creates several structural issues:</p><ol><li>Centralized cloud providers are vulnerable to single points of failure, where outages or service disruptions can take down entire applications globally.</li><li>Developers are forced to trust cloud providers not to tamper with workloads, inspect their sensitive data, or become compromised. This ripples into trust and privacy issues for users and developers alike, and for applications that manage financial logic, private user data, and/or cryptographic operations, the trust assumption is significant.</li><li>Cloud infrastructure is optimized for large, centralized workloads rather than globally distributed, event-driven computation, leading to cost and inefficiency issues. The impact of these inefficiencies is evident in specific use cases, such as for bots and automations.</li><li>Centralized compute undermines the core promise and premise of <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/decentralized" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralization</a>; a decentralized protocol that relies on centralized execution inherits those weaknesses.</li></ol><p>Acurast is designed to address these issues and the fundamental contradiction of decentralized protocols that rely on centralized compute.</p><h2 id="how-acurast-works-in-practice">How Acurast Works in Practice</h2><p>Acurast replaces centralized servers with a decentralized network of smartphones, featuring carefully designed underlying mechanics that preserve reliability and security. Developers deploy workloads to the Acurast network in a serverless manner, ranging from simple scripts and automations to more complex <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/off-chain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">off-chain</a> tasks. The network then assigns these jobs to suitable devices.</p><p>Selection takes into account factors such as performance characteristics, availability, and security requirements, and execution happens inside the device’s TEE. This process ensures that the workload can’t be modified or observed by the device owner or external attackers.</p><p>Once execution of the task(s) is complete, results are cryptographically verified and settled <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/on-chain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">on-chain</a>. Device operators are then compensated for the compute they provided, while developers pay for compute usage using the network’s native token, ACU (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/acurast/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ACU</a>). For developers, this feels similar to using a serverless cloud service, but without the reliance on centralized infrastructure.</p><h2 id="why-smartphones-are-part-of-the-solution">Why Smartphones Are Part of the Solution</h2><p>Using smartphones as infrastructure may sound unconventional, but they’re uniquely suited for decentralization and decentralized compute.</p><p>Unlike data centers, often concentrated in specific regions, phones are everywhere. This establishes low-latency, native computation without the need for data center expansion or further infrastructure buildout — just by using what we already have in our pockets.</p><p>Smartphones are globally distributed by default and, most importantly, underutilized, with large portions of their compute capacity remaining idle for most of the day. Acurast monetizes this unused potential without interfering with normal device usage. Through this breakthrough, Acurast creates a geographically distributed, massively scaled, resilient compute network.</p><h2 id="why-acurast-matters-now">Why Acurast Matters Now</h2><p>The timing of Acurast is intentional. <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/depin" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINs)</a> have been growing rapidly because they offer a solution that centralized cloud providers struggle to provide. AI workloads are also increasing rapidly, in tandem with AI adoption, as more compute is required to keep processes running smoothly. Running inference closer to users through their smartphones lowers latency, improves privacy, and reduces costs.</p><p>Smartphone hardware has reached a level of maturity that makes secure, continuous compute viable without impacting the user experience of routine smartphone use. Participation in the Acurast network does not detract from smartphone functionality, and as such, it works as a bonus for general smartphone users.</p><p>Importantly, centralized cloud providers are increasingly facing skepticism, driven by rising costs, regulatory pressures, and outages. With developers seeking more reliable alternatives and actively searching for optimal routes, Acurast offers infrastructure that aligns with where the ecosystem is heading.</p><p>The Acurast decentralized network has already onboarded over 166,700 smartphones, executed more than 322,000 deployments, and processed over 575 million on-chain transactions.</p><h2 id="tokenomics-and-what-comes-next">Tokenomics and What Comes Next</h2><p>The Acurast network is powered by the ACU token, which serves as the system's economic backbone. ACU is used to pay for compute deployments and network transactions, incentivize device operators, support staking and economic security mechanisms, and eventually enable on-chain governance. It also acts as the gas currency for compute services across the ecosystem.</p><p>At TGE, the initial total supply will be 1 billion ACU, with a distribution model that prioritizes community participation and long-term network sustainability.</p><p>Following the TGE, the network will activate full economic incentives, migrate testnet participants, expand developer tooling, and continue scaling adoption across Web3, DePIN, and enterprise use cases. Unlike many infrastructural projects, Acurast enters this phase with a network that is already live, tested, and globally distributed.</p><p>Acurast offers a credible path toward decentralized compute by leveraging hardware that already exists on a global scale.
