Ethereum in 2025 showed measurable growth across usage, infrastructure, and adoption. The network processed record transaction volumes, hosted most of the world’s stablecoins, scaled through rollups, and supported both institutions and consumer apps at scale. The numbers confirm Ethereum’s role as a settlement and execution layer rather than a speculative network.

How Big Was Ethereum’s Financial Activity In 2025?

Ethereum remained the core financial layer of crypto in 2025, supported by falling transaction costs and expanding Layer 2 usage.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, transaction fees on Ethereum Layer 1 reached their lowest levels in five years. On Layer 2 networks, average fees dropped below $0.01. This made everyday use cases such as payments, remittances, and savings viable at scale.
Key financial figures from 2025 include:

Over $99 billion in DeFi total value locked, more than nine times the next-largest Layer 1 ecosystem

$18.8 trillion in stablecoin settlement volume processed on Ethereum

$20 billion in prediction market volume across Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks

Smart wallets entered production after the Pectra upgrade in May. These wallets support account abstraction, which allows features such as gas fee sponsorship, spending limits, and recovery options. As a result, apps could remove transaction fees entirely for users.
Ethereum also supported tokenized equities in 2025. Robinhood EU, Gemini, and Kraken launched stock tokens using Ethereum infrastructure. Robinhood confirmed it is building its own Layer 2 network using Arbitrum Orbit technology.
Why Did Institutions Increase Ethereum Usage?
Institutional activity on Ethereum accelerated in 2025 due to clearer regulation and working onchain infrastructure.
Public companies began managing treasury assets directly on Ethereum. Exchange-traded funds and strategic reserves held more than $35 billion worth of ETH by year-end.
Real-world assets also expanded onchain:

Over $12 billion in tokenized real-world assets were issued on Ethereum

Banks and payment firms used Ethereum Layer 2s for settlement and reconciliation

Institutions used smart contracts to manage yield strategies through DeFi

Ethereum’s appeal came from its ability to combine settlement, programmability, and auditability in one system. Capital could move 24 hours a day with full onchain verification.

How Did Ethereum Scale In 2025?

Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap showed clear results in 2025.
The Layer 2 ecosystem expanded rapidly:

Celo completed its transition to an Ethereum Layer 2

Ronin and Nillion announced plans to follow

Combined rollup throughput reached 5,600 transactions per second on average

Protocol upgrades supported this growth. The Fusaka upgrade in December introduced Peer Data Availability Sampling, or PeerDAS. This increased blob capacity by up to eight times, reducing Layer 2 costs further.
Ethereum also raised its Layer 1 gas limit to 60 million, increasing base settlement capacity by roughly 33 percent.
Layer 2 networks handled high-frequency execution, while Ethereum Layer 1 preserved security and decentralization.
Did Interoperability Improve Between Ethereum Networks?
Interoperability advanced significantly in 2025, reducing friction between Ethereum networks.
New standards played a central role:

ERC-7683 standardized order and settlement interfaces

The Open Intents Framework, backed by over 30 teams, enabled cheaper and faster cross-chain execution

The Ethereum Interop Layer launched on testnet in November

These tools allowed users and institutions to interact across chains using single-signature transactions. The goal was to make Ethereum feel like one network rather than many disconnected chains.

What Role Did Privacy Play On Ethereum?

Privacy became a major development focus in 2025.
Privacy-focused protocols on Ethereum grew by more than 60% in value locked during the year. The number of privacy-related projects exceeded 750, covering wallets, identity, storage, and DeFi.
Privacy-preserving rollups matured, enabling private execution with Ethereum-based settlement. These tools allowed users to interact without exposing sensitive financial details while maintaining verifiability.

How Did AI Agents Use Ethereum In 2025?

2025 marked the year AI agents became economic participants on Ethereum.
AI agents do not have bank accounts. They use wallets and cryptographic proofs. Ethereum provided the infrastructure for this activity.
Key developments included:

The x402 payment standard enabling agent-to-agent payments

Wallet-level permissions to limit spending and enforce rules

ERC-8004, a standard for agent discovery and reputation

More than 7,500 AI agents were registered on ERC-8004 testnets. Ethereum became the settlement layer for machine-to-machine commerce involving data, compute, and services.

How Was Ethereum Used For Global Coordination?

Ethereum supported real-world coordination efforts in 2025.
Examples include:

Crypto donations for earthquake relief in Myanmar and Thailand

The World Food Program US accepting ETH donations

Pop-up cities such as ETH Enugu in Nigeria funded and governed onchain

Bhutan migrated its national digital identity system to Ethereum, anchoring over 200,000 citizen IDs on a public blockchain. Proof-of-personhood tools matured, improving resistance to fake accounts in voting and funding programs.

How Many Users And Apps Ran On Ethereum?

Consumer activity on Ethereum reached new levels in 2025.
According to DappRadar:
Over 244 million unique active wallets interacted with Ethereum Layer 1 apps
Ethereum led all blockchains in NFT volume and royalties. Millions of NFT collections launched across Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks.
One notable example was “White Rabbit,” an anime project funded through Ethereum NFTs. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Innovation in Emerging Media Programming.
DAOs also expanded:

Thousands of DAOs governed billions in treasury assets

Governance tooling matured, improving accountability and treasury management

New regulatory frameworks helped DAOs operate legally

What Technical Upgrades Shaped Ethereum In 2025?

Ethereum shipped two major upgrades in seven months.
The Pectra upgrade expanded account abstraction and smart wallet functionality. The Fusaka upgrade increased data availability for Layer 2s.
Zero-knowledge technology also advanced. ZK coprocessors allowed applications to move heavy computation offchain. Researchers demonstrated real-time zero-knowledge proofs for Ethereum blocks.
Just a few days ago, Vitalik Buterin stated that the blockchain trilemma has been solved in practice. PeerDAS is live on mainnet, and ZK-EVMs have reached production-level performance. Most Ethereum blocks can now be verified in seconds.

How Large Is Ethereum After 10 Years?

Ethereum marked its 10-year anniversary in July 2025.
By the end of the year:

Over 88 million smart contracts had been deployed

Daily transactions hit a record 1.74 million

Ethereum supported 32,000 active developers

More than 16,000 new developers joined between January and September

Ethereum has maintained uninterrupted uptime for a decade, reinforcing its reputation for reliability.

How Dominant Are Stablecoins On Ethereum?

Ethereum hosted approximately 54%of all stablecoins in circulation in 2025.
For comparison:

Tron held 26%, driven by USDT payments

Solana held about 5 percent

BNB Chain held around 4.7%

Ethereum dominated institutional settlement, while Tron led in retail payment volume due to lower fees.

Conclusion

Ethereum in 2025 demonstrated scale through measurable usage rather than promises. The network processed trillions in stablecoin volume, supported institutional finance, scaled via Layer 2 rollups, and expanded into identity, privacy, AI, and governance.
Ten years of uninterrupted operation, continuous upgrades, and growing developer participation positioned Ethereum as durable infrastructure for decentralized computation and settlement.
