The global non-fungible token market, spearheaded by blue-chip NFT series, has begun showing signs of life this new year after plummeting to its lowest level in the past three months of 2025. This huge hope came after Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin changed his avatar back to the Milady Maker NFT. Could this mark the turning point of the NFT market?

On January 01, 2026, the Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin updated his X (formerly Twitter) profile picture to a Milady Maker NFT-style image to ring in the new year. The avatar change took effect at 8:00 a.m. Beijing Time (UTC+0:00). This update immediately impacted the market, with the floor price of the Milady NFT collection surging by over 50%. The Milady Maker NFT trading sales volume also skyrocketed by +100% to nearly $500,000.

Even though Vitalik Buterin is often known for changing his avatar for fun or to support projects, this change appeared to be a new year greeting or a nod to Web3 culture. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin updated his X avatar to a Milady Maker NFT in early 2025, resulting in a significant surge in the collection’s floor price, which increased by more than 50%. His move stirred a substantial and heated discussion regarding potential endorsements.

Launched in 2021, Milady Maker is a globally acknowledged non-fungible token project from the digital asset company Remilia Corporation. This popular, yet controversial, NFT collection features a limited edition of 10,000 generative Ethereum-based PFP NFTs, characterized by a 2000s Tokyo “neochibi” aesthetic. The NFT project emphasizes Y2K Street style, with “drip” scores taking precedence over rarity, and has gained notoriety through memes and endorsements from Elon Musk.

Ethereum’s boss avatar change to the Milady Maker NFT collection has attracted the attention of Beeble, one of the prominent digital artists. In his daily artwork, Beeple has drawn a picture suggesting that Vitalik Buterin might be cooking something big in the Ethereum blockchain network in partnership with the Milady Maker NFT team. That combo could definitely signal something big brewing in the NFT space.
