The government of the Republic of Sakha is assessing the possibility of deploying bitcoin mining infrastructure at the Ulugur and Ergedei gas fields. These assets are operated by Ulugurneotegaz, a joint venture between Alrosa and SakhaTransNefteGaz. Until recently, pipeline exports were viewed as the primary monetization route.

However, the strategy is evolving. Gas from the fields may now be redirected to supply energy for Alrosa’s industrial operations. At the same time, officials and market participants are studying the feasibility of allocating part of the resource to cryptocurrency mining.

Several mining companies have expressed interest in the region. Still, industry representatives emphasize concerns over electricity costs and overall project economics. Energy pricing remains a decisive factor for large-scale bitcoin mining investments.

According to industry estimates, available gas volumes could support four to five power units with a capacity of about 20 megawatts each. The cost of a single mining module, including power generation and equipment, is estimated at 4–5 billion rubles.

Investment experts note that a 50–100 MW project could require several hundred million dollars. Due to crypto market volatility, payback periods are difficult to predict. As a result, analysts recommend starting with a small pilot facility before scaling.

Alrosa has stated that only geological exploration is currently underway at the Ulugur and Ergedei sites. The company has not received formal requests from mining firms for gas supplies. Nevertheless, discussions around alternative use cases highlight growing interest in energy-based crypto mining.

Using natural gas for bitcoin mining is increasingly viewed as a local monetization strategy. It reduces reliance on export infrastructure and helps utilize stranded energy resources.

Still, successful implementation will depend on regulatory clarity, transparent pricing models, and phased development. Market observers believe the long-term viability of such projects will largely depend on cryptocurrency prices and regional energy policy.
