Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated 256 ETH to privacy-focused messaging projects Session and SimpleX to enhance digital privacy, emphasizing encrypted communication during the 2025 Shanghai Blockchain International Week.
Buterin’s grant underscores the strategic importance of metadata privacy in blockchain, boosting interest in decentralization and causing a 450% rise in Session’s token value, SESH.
Vitalik Buterin has donated 256 ETH, approximately valued between $760,000 and $800,000, supporting Session and SimpleX privacy projects. This move underscores his commitment to enhancing digital privacy through decentralized technologies.
The grants split equally, 128 ETH each, were received by Session and SimpleX. Vitalik Buterin, a pivotal blockchain figure, emphasizes the necessity of end-to-end encrypted messaging for metadata privacy.
The donation caused Session's native token, SESH, to surge by about 450%, reflecting increased market interest. Developers and users view Buterin’s support as a crucial endorsement for these privacy initiatives.
The financial implications remain ecosystem-focused, avoiding direct institutional exchanges. No reported changes in on-chain Ethereum assets link to this funding.

Alexander Linton of Session emphasized the focus on decentralized node incentives and privacy defense. Developments support stronger resistance to centralized oversight through innovative blockchain solutions.
Historical precedents within Ethereum usually focus on infrastructure rather than privacy apps, making Buterin's grant noteworthy. Privacy initiatives benefit from recent attention amid regulatory scrutiny, reiterating the strategic shift towards metadata resistance.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, said, "End-to-end encrypted messaging is essential for protecting digital privacy… permissionless account creation and metadata privacy are the next major priorities."
