$jesse

We’ve seen that even being at the top of the ecosystem doesn’t guarantee profits from a creator coin. Jesse Pollak (co-founder of Base, former Coinbase exec, part of one of the fastest-growing L2s in crypto) launched $JESSE last week. The token has drawn massive attention, given Pollak's audience and Base’s marketing support. Yet even with these advantages, the value dropped the next day and doesn’t seem likely to reach the opening price again.

Tokens come and go all the time, but this one is important if you are a creator looking to monetize your craft. The majority of web3 creators today are posting on Base and likely have minted a Zora creator coin. But if $JESSE is not performing outside a single ecosystem, why would anyone think their own token will? Still, $JESSE offers a useful lens to understand the mechanics and possibilities of creator coins.

How Zora Creator Coins Work

The idea behind creator coins is to allow fans to “align” with a creator. Audience loves the content, wants to support the author, buys the coin, and the author’s metrics rise, along with the $ value of the profile. On Zora, each post is minted into its own token, and each creator also has a profile-level creator coin. In theory, token holders can trade these coins on the market. In practice, many of these tokens trade like illiquid assets and calm down once the initial excitement fades. Most have no value outside the ecosystem where they’re launched. Dozens of coins are minted on Zora almost every hour, and users trade each other’s coins to connect and show support. For many, that’s where the story ends.

Even high-profile cases illustrate the limits. Jesse’s coin attracted massive attention and early trading activity. Based on the protocol’s fee structure, a 0.5% cut of trades would go to him, and as the initial liquidity provider he could also collect a share of swap fees. Some rough estimates suggest that, if $JESSE had trading volume of tens of millions of dollars in the first days, this could translate into hundreds of thousands of dollars, but these numbers are speculative. Volume was likely inflated by hype and sniper bots, and there’s no public record confirming exact earnings. The point is that, even with a built-in audience and intense promotion, the coin’s value and income potential are limited and unpredictable.

It would be interesting to see what might happen if a real-world celebrity launched a creator coin. The dynamics could be very different, with far larger audiences and trading volume. So far, Jesse is the closest thing Zora has to a celebrity, and his coin is one to watch.

A typical creator on Zora is not a celebrity. Most coins see minimal trading. Liquidity is low. Half of each creator coin supply is locked in vesting. As if that’s not enough, token volatility combined with trading fees often wipes out any small gains. Even when a coin spikes briefly, it usually cools off fast, leaving little to cash out.

Zora shows how creator coins work on a post and profile level, but writers have another layer to explore: Paragraph coins, which let authors back their work across an entire body of writing rather than individual posts.

Tokenizing Your Writing: The Logic Behind Paragraph Writer Coins

Paragraph coins let writers tokenize their work and build a direct relationship with readers. Each writer can launch a coin representing their body of work. Audience members buy these coins to support the writer, and the writer receives a share of trading revenue, creating monetization tied to engagement.

Both Paragraph and Zora run on the Base network, so writers can link a Paragraph coin to a Zora creator coin, letting Zora holders access early-supporter rewards. This connection makes it easier to drive engagement across both platforms.

At launch, a writer receives 50% of their total supply vested, with the other 50% liquid in a Uniswap V4 pool. 5% is airdropped to early supporters. Vesting occurs linearly over three years. Writers also earn 0.5% of every buy or sell, drawn from the protocol’s 1% trading fee. Revenue depends entirely on trading activity and engagement, so earnings are never guaranteed, but the structure mirrors Zora’s model to align incentives and prevent immediate dumps.

Actual earnings depend entirely on demand and trading activity. If readers engage and trade, the coin can generate meaningful income. If not, it sits idle. Paragraph writer coins give writers a way to monetize and connect with fans, especially when linked to Zora, but the upside relies on traction and community interest.

Why I’m Still Participating

It’s extremely unlikely that you or I will make money with these coins, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t participate. I still appreciate the concept. I have tokenized my Zora and Paragraph profiles, but I don’t expect to make money with them (though that would be nice). I launched them as part of exploring the web3 universe.

Creator coins and writer coins are still very early. Web3 as a whole is still premature. Hopefully, big improvements are underway. For now, it’s worth being there, experimenting, and paying attention. Each token and each trade are ways to see the ecosystem evolve and to understand what might work if and when creator coins mature. But for now, let's keep an eye on $JESSE.
