A hobbyist Bitcoin miner defied astronomical odds by mining a $265,000 block using a single, old ASIC unit on November 22, 2025, via the CKPool.
The event underscores the enduring viability of solo mining, demonstrating decentralization's resilience amidst increasing centralization in the crypto mining industry.
A hobbyist miner achieved a rare win by solving a Bitcoin block valued at <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2025/11/23/hobbyist-miner-wins-usd265k-bitcoin-block-using-just-one-old-asic" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">$265K</a> using a single old ASIC. This event defied 1 in 180 million odds for block mining, as confirmed by official CKPool sources.
Con Kolivas, creator of CKPool, confirmed the miner used a modest 6 TH/s hashrate. "The odds of a 6TH/s miner solving a block on any given day are about 1 in 180 million. This is living proof that solo mining is still possible, even in today’s centralized landscape," stated Kolivas.
The win has reignited interest within the hobbyist mining community. Discussions across CKPool forums have emphasized the real prospects for small-scale miners in Bitcoin's extensive network where such achievements remain possible.
The miner operated without institutional backing, showcasing the resilience of retail miners leveraging personal resources against an industry increasingly dominated by major players.
Despite its uniqueness, the win accounted for a negligible portion of Bitcoin's 855.7 EH/s network hashrate. Hobbyists continue pursuing solo mining, where even minimal setups like a Bitaxe Gamma ASIC can yield significant returns.
This event bolsters Bitcoin’s decentralized ethos, reflecting historical trends where small miners occasionally outperform despite the odds. Future scenarios may see small setups achieving similar successes, potentially sparking interest amid regulatory and technological shifts.
