A powerful technical signal has appeared in the cryptocurrency market, suggesting the potential beginning of a new phase for altcoins against Bitcoin.
The chart analysis, shared by crypto analyst Merlijn The Trader and reposted by Chad Steingraber, a well-known XRP enthusiast, points to what has been described as “the rarest altcoin signal” seen in years.
The chart shows a Monthly MACD bullish cross for the Others/BTC pair, a development that has historically coincided with the start of major altcoin rallies. Merlijn noted that only three such MACD crosses have occurred in the past eight years. Each one, according to his analysis, marked the early stages of an altcoin “supercycle.”
The chart highlights these points in 2017, 2020, and now. The next cross is expected to define the market’s direction for the rest of 2025. The previous signals preceded periods of strong performance across altcoins, suggesting that market conditions may once again favor assets like XRP.

Historical Context and Market Cycles

The captioned chart tracks altcoin performance against Bitcoin through previous cycles in 2018 and 2021. Both cycles peaked at similar trend levels, shown by a long-term resistance line connecting the highs of those years. The current setup shows altcoins trading near historical support levels, where prior reversals have occurred.
Below the price chart, the MACD indicator represents the signal line crossing above the slower-moving average, forming the bullish cross. This indicator, often used to identify potential trend reversals, suggests that momentum may now be shifting back in favor of altcoins.

In the past, each time this cross appeared, it coincided with the start of a strong upward movement lasting several months. Steingraber reacted to the analysis by stating that the market is “ready to fire on all cylinders,” signaling his confidence that the setup could lead to renewed momentum for XRP and other altcoins.

Expectations for 2025

The chart’s projection points to 2025 as the next potential peak for altcoins relative to Bitcoin, following a pattern consistent with the last two cycles. If this cycle continues as indicated, altcoins could move from current consolidation levels into an expansion phase over the next several weeks.
While Steingraber did not issue specific price targets, his post says XRP, along with other major altcoins, could benefit from the same momentum that historically followed similar signals.
