A recent post by Xaif (@Xaif_Crypto) on X featured NBA star Tristan Thompson discussing crypto investment, a trend that is quietly spreading among professional athletes.
Thompson revealed that over the past several months, numerous teammates and former players have reached out to him, seeking advice on how to move part of their earnings into digital assets.
He highlighted a changing attitude toward wealth preservation and control, particularly among high-net-worth athletes who are looking beyond traditional markets.

A New Approach to Financial Growth

In the video, Thompson explained that athletes are no longer content with letting their money sit idle in bank accounts. He said that many now “want it to work and do something” rather than staying in places that do not offer the best returns. This sentiment aligns with a growing belief that cryptocurrencies, especially established ones like XRP, Solana, and Bitcoin, offer stronger potential for long-term value.
Thompson explained how he advises players at different stages in their careers. For rookies, he encourages a disciplined approach, suggesting that even a small portion of discretionary income can be allocated to crypto.
“Take half of that and go open yourself a wallet,” he said, urging them to learn about assets such as Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, and XRP. The focus, he emphasized, should be on education and responsible exposure rather than speculation.

Why XRP Is Gaining Momentum

Among the assets Thompson mentioned, XRP’s inclusion stood out to many in the crypto community. While XRP has high institutional appeal, the asset has increasingly attracted interest from retail investors and now, it appears, from professional athletes as well.

Its appeal lies in its efficiency, fast settlement times, and the fact that it is part of a growing financial ecosystem supported by regulated entities. According to Xaif, athletes are now allocating up to 5% of their net worth to cryptocurrencies, seeing assets like XRP as a haven for preserving and growing wealth.

A New Phase of Athlete Investment Strategy

Thompson’s comments reflect more than personal interest. They point to a shift in how athletes think about their financial independence. He described the move into crypto as part of a desire among players to feel “like their own boss,” referencing names like LeBron James, Alex Rodriguez, and Magic Johnson as examples of figures who have embraced ownership and entrepreneurship.
As this mindset spreads, assets with real utility, such as XRP, are poised to benefit. The involvement of prominent figures like Thompson gives further visibility to the asset’s value proposition, helping normalize the idea of professional athletes diversifying into blockchain-based financial systems.
