In the fast-paced world of cryptocurrency and cutting-edge technology, standing out is not just an advantage—it is a necessity. As the digital landscape becomes increasingly saturated with innovative projects and ambitious founders, the challenge of capturing attention intensifies. This is where figures like Roy Lee, co-founder and CEO of Cluely, emerge as pivotal disruptors. Lee is set to bring his unconventional wisdom to the Disrupt Stage at Bitcoin World Disrupt 2025, offering a masterclass on how he leveraged a controversial approach to propel his AI startup into the spotlight. For anyone navigating the crowded crypto and tech markets, Lee’s insights into aggressive visibility and unconventional AI startup marketing could be game-changing.

Roy Lee is not one to shy away from controversy; in fact, he embraces it as a core element of his business model. His company, Cluely, an AI meeting assistant, transforms conversations into searchable and shareable reports, offering real-time insights. While hundreds of companies vie for attention with similar AI-powered solutions, Cluely has distinguished itself through Lee’s unique and often provocative marketing tactics. Lee’s journey to viral fame began during his time as a Columbia University student, where he gained notoriety for documenting his use of an AI assistant to ‘cheat’ on Big Tech interviews. This audacious act, publicly shared on social media, set the stage for his entrepreneurial venture.
Upon dropping out, Lee launched Cluely with the audacious tagline, “the cheat on everything startup.” This was a deliberate choice, designed to generate buzz and engagement, regardless of the criticism it might attract. This ‘rage-baiting’ approach has become synonymous with Cluely, a strategy many have tried to replicate but few have mastered. By intentionally stirring the pot, Lee ensures that Cluely consistently cuts through the digital noise, securing visibility that companies ten times its size struggle to acquire through traditional marketing channels.
<h2 id="strong-ai-startup-marketing-strong-beyond-traditional-pr">AI Startup Marketing: Beyond Traditional PR</h2>
In an era where most startups cautiously adhere to conventional public relations strategies, Roy Lee’s approach to AI startup marketing is a stark contrast. He operates on the principle that playing it safe often leads to obscurity, and that in the consumer market, attention is the ultimate currency. This philosophy has not only made Cluely a household name in tech circles but has also attracted significant investment. Earlier this year, Cluely successfully raised an impressive $15 million in a Series A funding round, backed by the prominent venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
The allocation of this substantial funding further underscores Lee’s commitment to unconventional marketing. Instead of solely investing in product development or traditional advertising, Cluely has channeled its resources into flashy launch videos, cultivating a large team of content creator interns, and establishing a prominent office in San Francisco. This strategic expenditure highlights a belief that aggressive, attention-grabbing content creation is as vital as the technology itself, especially when operating at the epicenter of the current AI bubble. Lee has masterfully leveraged this environment to Cluely’s advantage, proving that a bold marketing stance can yield tangible financial and brand benefits.
<h2 id="achieving-strong-consumer-tech-visibility-strong-in-a-saturated-market">Achieving Consumer Tech Visibility in a Saturated Market</h2>
The consumer tech market is a battlefield, constantly inundated with new products and services vying for limited user attention. For startups, achieving meaningful consumer tech visibility is often the biggest hurdle. Roy Lee’s Cluely offers a compelling case study in overcoming this challenge. His method bypasses traditional marketing funnels, instead opting for direct, impactful, and often controversial engagement that forces an audience to take notice. While some may question the ethics or long-term sustainability of ‘rage-baiting,’ its immediate effectiveness in generating conversations and media coverage is undeniable.
Cluely’s ability to consistently generate headlines and social media trends demonstrates that a well-executed, if unconventional, strategy can create a powerful brand presence. This approach is particularly relevant for the AI sector, which is experiencing an unprecedented boom. With countless AI tools and platforms emerging daily, the ability to differentiate and capture mindshare is paramount. Lee’s experience shows that sometimes, the most effective way to be seen is to be undeniably provocative, sparking debate and discussion that naturally amplifies a startup’s message far beyond what a typical press release could achieve.
