FROM VAULTS TO BLOCKCHAINS: THE INEVITABLE DIGITALIZATION OF GOLD

Among all real-world assets (RWAs) that have been tokenized, gold is perhaps the most natural candidate. It carries centuries of global consensus, deep liquidity, and intrinsic value independent of any sovereign credit. When the crypto industry moved beyond stablecoins to search for the next “real-world anchor,” gold emerged as the perfect bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.

For decades, gold has played the same roles — inflation hedge, safe haven, reserve of value. But since 2020, a new form has quietly redefined its relevance: tokenized gold. By turning one ounce — or even one hundred-thousandth of an ounce — of physical bullion into a blockchain-based token, gold became programmable.

Each tokenized unit represents ownership of physical gold stored in secure vaults, backed by custodians and verified through audits. The blockchain becomes the ledger of truth; wallets replace bank accounts; smart contracts take over clearing and settlement. This combination makes tokenized gold one of the most practical forms of RWA — it doesn’t depend on future cash flow or speculative hype, but on a universally accepted store of value.

As of Q3 2025, the global market cap of tokenized gold has reached around $1.5 billion, with PAX Gold (PAXG) and Tether Gold (XAUt) together controlling over 85% of the market. The rest is shared among projects like Kinesis Gold (KAU), Aurus Gold (AWG), and Cache Gold (CGT). While still small compared to trillion-dollar stablecoins, the growth curve is steep, fueled by rising inflation, geopolitical risk, and debt uncertainty.

If stablecoins turned the U.S. dollar into a programmable asset, tokenized gold is doing the same for trust itself — giving the internet its first truly tangible digital commodity.

THREE MODELS OF TOKENIZED GOLD: TRUST, ECOSYSTEM, AND INNOVATION

Although every gold token claims to put physical gold on-chain, the paths they take — and the trade-offs they make — differ sharply. The current market can be divided into three main models: regulated trust-based, ecosystem-driven, and yield-generating innovators.

(1) Regulated Trust Model – The Compliance Standard

PAX Gold (PAXG) represents the benchmark of compliance. Issued by Paxos Trust Company under the supervision of the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), each PAXG equals one troy ounce of LBMA-certified gold held in the Brink’s vaults of London. Holders legally own specific gold bars, identifiable by serial number, weight, and purity.

This model treats blockchain as an audit layer rather than an experiment in decentralization. Every month, Paxos publishes third-party audit reports proving that the number of tokens matches the amount of physical gold held in custody. As a result, PAXG has become the institutional standard for tokenized gold, used by traditional financial giants like JPMorgan and Fidelity in RWA frameworks.

Its stability and regulatory clarity give it the tightest peg to spot gold prices, minimal spreads, and strong liquidity. In DeFi, PAXG is accepted as collateral across major protocols like Aave, Compound, and Curve — a rare case of an asset trusted both on Wall Street and on-chain.

(2) Ecosystem Liquidity Model – Power through Network Effects

If PAXG represents the “regulation-first” path, Tether Gold (XAUt) embodies the “ecosystem-first” approach. Issued by TG Commodities, a subsidiary of Tether, each XAUt represents one ounce of gold stored in Swiss vaults.

What XAUt lacks in transparency, it makes up for in distribution and liquidity. By leveraging the massive Tether user base — from Bitfinex to OKX to the broader USDT network — XAUt has become one of the most widely circulated forms of digital gold.

Its reserve audits are less frequent and granular than PAXG’s, raising questions among compliance-focused investors. Yet for crypto-native users, utility often trumps regulation. XAUt can be traded, transferred, or collateralized instantly across the Tether ecosystem, functioning almost like a “gold-backed stablecoin.” In market stress events — such as the 2022 LUNA collapse — XAUt often acted as a safe-haven asset, gaining liquidity when others dried up.

Tether’s approach highlights an uncomfortable truth: in the crypto world, liquidity itself can be a form of trust.

(3) Yield and Innovation Model – Making Gold Work Again

Beyond PAXG and XAUt lies a third category — projects experimenting with new forms of financialization.

Kinesis Gold (KAU), launched by the Australian Bullion Exchange (ABX), introduces a revenue-sharing model: every transaction involving KAU generates micro-fees that are redistributed to holders, effectively giving gold a “yield.” The system has attracted both individual investors and governments — notably Indonesia’s partnership for gold-based trade settlements.

Aurus Gold (AWG) adopts a decentralized minting mechanism, allowing multiple bullion dealers to issue gold-backed tokens into a shared liquidity pool. Alongside silver (AWS) and platinum (AWP) tokens, Aurus aims to build a multi-metal stablecoin network.

Cache Gold (CGT) once stood out for its radical transparency: every gram of gold was traceable by serial number and photo on-chain. Yet, without sufficient scale or ecosystem support, it was eventually merged into the PAXG framework in 2025.
These experimental models push tokenized gold into a new phase — from a static store of value to an active yield-bearing asset that can move, earn, and interact within the broader digital economy.

THE STRUCTURAL TRADE-OFFS: REGULATION, CUSTODY, LIQUIDITY, AND YIELD

Beneath the technical differences lies a deeper tension — a four-way balance among regulation, custody, liquidity, and yield. Every gold token project chooses its own equilibrium.

Regulation and Custody:
PAXG thrives on strict oversight — NYDFS licensing, monthly audits, and clear legal ownership rights. It’s the top choice for institutions. XAUt, in contrast, operates under looser jurisdictions like Hong Kong and El Salvador, prioritizing accessibility over regulation. Kinesis and other smaller projects build hybrid compliance through bullion networks, but their global status remains less defined. The future may mirror the stablecoin market: regulated tokens dominating institutional use, while high-liquidity alternatives win the retail crowd.

Liquidity and Ecosystem Integration:
A gold token without liquidity is just a digital certificate. The success of PAXG and XAUt comes from ecosystem reach — listed on Binance, Coinbase, and Bitfinex, accepted across DeFi protocols, and tradable 24/7. The next frontier lies in cross-chain interoperability and Layer-2 integration, which could turn gold into a native settlement asset across chains.

Yield and Financial Utility:
Traditional gold earns nothing unless sold. Tokenized gold, however, can generate yield via collateralization, lending, or transaction-based rewards. Projects like Kinesis and Aurus are exploring these hybrid mechanics. In time, gold-backed tokens could anchor low-volatility lending pools and stablecoin reserves — transforming “passive gold” into “productive collateral.”

These dynamics reveal the true nature of tokenized gold: not just digitized metal, but a financial infrastructure competing on trust, transparency, and adaptability.

THE NEXT PHASE: WHEN GOLD BECOMES A SETTLEMENT LAYER

If the past five years were about proving that gold can live on-chain, the next five will be about making it the backbone of on-chain settlement. Three trends are already unfolding.

1. Gold-Backed Stablecoins — The Dual-Anchor Era
The crypto economy is dominated by dollar stablecoins, but dependence on U.S. banking rails remains a structural risk. Gold-backed tokens offer an alternative anchor, immune to monetary debasement. In regions pursuing de-dollarization — such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia — tokenized gold is being tested for trade settlement. The UAE–Indonesia partnership using Kinesis for gold-based payments is a glimpse of that future.

2. Institutional RWA Integration — Gold as the Gateway Asset
Among all RWAs, gold is the easiest for traditional finance to accept. Its physical backing and simple valuation make it an ideal entry point for banks and asset managers. Regulated gold tokens like PAXG are likely to appear in portfolios alongside bonds and money market funds, underpinning future RWA ETFs and decentralized wealth products.

3. DeFi Collateralization — Gold as a Cross-Protocol Settlement Asset
As DeFi protocols integrate real-world assets, tokenized gold is poised to become a cross-protocol collateral — a base layer for stablecoins, credit lines, and automated clearing. Imagine a world where stablecoins are backed not just by Treasury bills but also by tokenized gold, creating a hybrid “multi-asset standard” for on-chain finance.

In that world, gold is no longer just a hedge — it’s the neutral liquidity layer between digital and traditional finance.

CONCLUSION

Tokenized gold isn’t just about putting gold on a blockchain; it’s about rebuilding trust through transparency and programmability.

PAXG represents the triumph of regulation and clarity.

XAUt reflects the power of liquidity and network effects.

Kinesis, Aurus, and their peers embody the spirit of experimentation and yield.

Together, they outline a new trinity of digital value — compliance, efficiency, and innovation.

As inflation persists and macro uncertainty deepens, investors are rediscovering the comfort of tangible assets. Yet this time, gold doesn’t need to sleep in a vault. It can move across wallets, protocols, and continents — alive, verifiable, and programmable.

In the age of digital finance, gold is not just a relic of the past, but the settlement layer of the future.
