ETF Expansion Marks New Phase for Crypto Funds

Hashdex Asset Management and Nasdaq Global Indexes have expanded the Hashdex Nasdaq Crypto Index US ETF (NCIQ), adding Stellar (XLM), XRP, and Solana (SOL) alongside existing holdings in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). The ETF, listed on the Nasdaq, now holds five cryptocurrencies on a 1:1 basis.

The move follows the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approval of generic listing standards for crypto ETFs in September, a change that lowers barriers for multi-asset funds. These standards allow issuers to expand ETFs without seeking case-by-case approvals, provided included assets meet specific criteria such as being treated as commodities, featuring futures on reputable exchanges, and being subject to financial surveillance under the U.S. Intermarket Surveillance Group.

“Thanks to recent regulatory updates and the approval of generic listing standards, NCIQ is expanding today and will adapt over time as new assets meet the index’s and listing requirements,” said Samir Kerbage, CIO of Hashdex.

NCIQ’s expansion positions it as a first-mover multi-asset crypto ETF in the U.S., aligning with the SEC’s push for streamlined approvals and opening the door for broader institutional participation.

Regulatory Shifts Unlock ETF Pipeline

The SEC’s approval of generic listing standards, which revised rules governing commodity-based trust shares, is expected to accelerate the launch of dozens of crypto ETFs. Analysts say the change dramatically shortens approval timelines and creates a clearer path for funds that track a basket of digital assets. Market participants anticipate a wave of multi-asset ETFs reaching exchanges within months.

Last week, the SEC also approved Grayscale’s Digital Large Cap Fund, the first U.S. multi-crypto ETF, which includes Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, and Cardano. Together with NCIQ’s expansion, these developments underscore how regulatory shifts under the Trump administration are reshaping the ETF landscape. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has advocated for an “innovation exemption” and regulatory sandbox to foster experimentation in digital finance, marking a sharp departure from the enforcement-heavy approach of former Chair Gary Gensler.

Under the new framework, ETFs tracking multiple assets can gain approval if the underlying tokens meet commodity classification and surveillance requirements. This could expand market access for investors seeking diversified exposure to digital assets through regulated stock exchange products.

Impact on Crypto Adoption and Market Structure

The expansion of NCIQ comes as investor demand for regulated crypto products grows. By adding XRP, Solana, and Stellar, Hashdex broadens institutional exposure beyond Bitcoin and Ether, effectively blurring the line between traditional ETFs and the crypto markets. For financial advisors and institutional allocators, these products simplify crypto access by embedding them into familiar exchange-traded structures.

Market analysts expect the influx of multi-asset ETFs to boost liquidity across underlying tokens and deepen correlations between equities and crypto. However, they also caution that approval alone does not guarantee inflows. Success will depend on investor education, trading volumes, and the performance of the broader crypto market.

“The ETF wrapper has proven to be the gateway for mainstream adoption in equities and commodities,” one analyst said. “Applying the same model to crypto could be transformative, especially if issuers continue to add assets as they meet compliance thresholds.”

Investor Takeaway

Hashdex’s ETF signals a regulatory and market turning point: diversified crypto exposure is moving from the fringe into mainstream finance, but inflows will hinge on investor appetite in a volatile market.

Looking Ahead

The NCIQ expansion is likely just the beginning of a surge in crypto ETFs. Dozens of issuers have filings awaiting SEC signoff, many of which could soon be fast-tracked under the new rules. For Hashdex, staying ahead as an early mover could secure an advantage as institutional investors weigh options for diversified crypto exposure. Meanwhile, the SEC’s evolving stance highlights how regulatory clarity can accelerate innovation, creating opportunities for issuers and risks for incumbents unprepared for rapid change.

As more ETFs add assets like XRP, Solana, and Stellar, investors will gain new avenues for regulated access to digital assets. Whether this triggers significant capital inflows depends on the balance between regulatory trust and market volatility. For now, NCIQ’s expansion signals that the SEC’s long-anticipated green light for multi-asset crypto ETFs has arrived, with wider adoption expected to follow.
