Identity

Crypto researcher SMQKE shared a preprint released on September 16, 2025, titled “Decentralized Identity Management on Ripple: A Conceptual Framework for High-Speed, Low-Cost Identity Transactions in Attestation-Based Attribute-Based Identity.”
The paper, from the School of Computing at the University of Colombo, focuses on a framework for Attestation-Based Attribute-Based Decentralized Identity Management (ABABIDM) within the <a href="https://timestabloid.com/circle-launches-usdc-on-xrp-ledger-unlocking-new-utility-for-xrp-ecosystem/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ripple ecosystem.</a>
According to the abstract shown in the attached image, the research addresses the limitations of centralized identity management systems by proposing a decentralized model that uses attestations for security and privacy.
It situates the work within the wider literature on decentralized identity management, noting that while attribute-based identity systems have been studied, attestation-based frameworks remain underexplored. The authors argue that Ripple’s <a href="https://timestabloid.com/ripple-ceo-tells-banker-for-xrp-a-settlement-happens-in-3-seconds/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">transaction speed</a> and cost efficiency make it an appealing environment for implementing such a system.
The paper also emphasizes the importance of decentralization in mitigating risks associated with centralized identity repositories, including issues of privacy, control, and resilience against breaches. The preprint is positioned as an attempt to conceptualize a model on Ripple that integrates attribute-based identity with verifiable attestations in a scalable and low-cost way.

The images posted by SMQKE included a system model. The diagram outlines the interaction between a sidechain referred to as “IDM Sidechain” and the XRP Ledger. The IDM Sidechain is shown to manage identity credentials, verifiable attestations, and transactions involving issuers, users, and verifiers.
Connectivity between the sidechain and the <a href="https://timestabloid.com/research-positions-xrp-ledger-to-lead-market-estimated-by-wef-to-hit-867t/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP Ledger </a>is represented through the Axelar network and the XRPL EVM bridge. This highlights a cross-chain interoperability approach where attestations and identity-related transactions can flow between the sidechain and the main ledger.
Within the model, issuers and verifiers operate alongside user accounts, with transactions recorded on the sidechain and the ledger. The inclusion of attestations suggests a framework built on trust verification mechanisms rather than relying solely on centralized identity providers.

<h2 id="b-comment-on-xls-40-amendment-b">Comment on XLS-40 Amendment</h2>
Alongside SMQKE’s post, an X user identified as JP commented on the relevance of <a href="https://timestabloid.com/digital-identity-did-amendment-on-the-xrp-ledger-is-finally-here/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ripple’s XLS-40 amendment. </a>JP <a href="https://x.com/obx1obx/status/1967952534494183898?s=46" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">noted</a> that the amendment, activated in early 2025, addresses identity. He further stated that if the University of Colombo’s research is reviewed and approved by Ripple, it could make the system even more secure.
The XLS-40 amendment, as mentioned by JP, is linked to identity features, and the comment connects its activation to the academic proposal. The implication presented in the tweet is that Ripple has already taken steps to integrate identity functionalities at the protocol level and that the research offers a structured conceptual pathway that could enhance those capabilities.
SMQKE’s post highlights the intersection of academic research and practical ledger development. The preprint lays out a decentralized identity management framework relying on attestations and cross-chain mechanisms, while JP’s remark ties the work to recent ledger-level changes, specifically XLS-40.
Together, the research and the comment suggest that Ripple’s infrastructure may be positioned to integrate advanced identity solutions that emphasize security, cost efficiency, and scalability.
