Sandwich Attacks exploit mempool transparency by inserting trades before and after a victim’s swap, inflating costs and capturing profit.

High slippage tolerance, large trades, and low-liquidity pools make users more vulnerable to Sandwich Attacks.

Lowering slippage, splitting trades, using private routes, and MEV blockers are effective defenses against these attacks.

A Sandwich Attack is a common front-running strategy in DeFi where attackers manipulate token prices by surrounding a victim’s trade, leading to hidden costs and losses.

WHAT IS SANDWICH ATTACK?

A Sandwich Attack is one of the most common front-running strategies in decentralized finance (DeFi). It exploits the small time gap between when a user submits a transaction and when it is actually confirmed on-chain. The attacker places two trades—one before and one after the victim’s transaction—effectively “sandwiching” it in the middle.

Here’s how it works in practice: the attacker first executes a buy order to push the token price higher. When the victim’s trade goes through, it executes at this inflated price. Immediately afterward, the attacker sells, pocketing the difference and walking away with a risk-free profit.

For the user, the result is painful. The transaction ends up costing more, and the value captured by the attacker comes directly from the user’s pocket.

This isn’t a rare event. Because decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are fully transparent, pending transactions are visible in the mempool. That visibility is exactly what allows attackers to slip in their own trades and manipulate the outcome. In many ways, a Sandwich Attack functions like an invisible tax on DeFi users—one that quietly eats into their capital every time they trade.

HOW A SANDWICH ATTACK OPERATES

Understanding the inner workings of a Sandwich Attack is essential for spotting and avoiding it. Here’s a breakdown of how a typical attack unfolds within an Automated Market Maker (AMM) environment such as Uniswap:

1️⃣ Step 1: Victim’s Transaction Broadcast A user submits a swap transaction on a DeFi platform, exchanging Token A for Token B. This pending trade enters the mempool, where it becomes visible before being confirmed on-chain.

2️⃣ Step 2: Attacker’s Front-Run Trade A malicious actor detects the pending swap and quickly submits a buy order for Token B, offering a higher gas fee. Validators are incentivized to prioritize this trade, executing it before the victim’s. The buy order drives up the price of Token B.

3️⃣ Step 3: Victim’s Trade Execution The user’s original transaction is then processed, but now at the inflated price caused by the attacker’s front-run. As a result, the victim receives fewer tokens than expected, making the swap far less favorable.

4️⃣ Step 4: Attacker’s Back-Run Sell Order Immediately after the victim’s trade, the attacker executes a sell order for Token B. By selling into the temporary price increase, the attacker locks in profit, while the victim absorbs the higher slippage and worse trade outcome.

SANDWICH ATTACK WARNING SIGNS & RISK FACTORS

To protect yourself from a Sandwich Attack, it’s critical to recognize the conditions that make you a likely target. While no strategy can offer total immunity, avoiding high-risk behaviors can significantly reduce your exposure.

✅ High Slippage Tolerance

Slippage is the gap between the expected trade price and the executed price. Setting a high slippage tolerance (e.g., 5% or above) gives attackers plenty of room to exploit. Most DeFi wallets set a default slippage around 0.5%, which is safer for typical swaps.

✅ Large Trade Size

Big swaps attract attackers because the price impact is greater, leaving more profit on the table. Splitting a large transaction into smaller parts can help minimize the incentive for an attack.

✅ Low Liquidity Pools

Trading in thin liquidity pools increases vulnerability. With less liquidity available, it’s easier for attackers to manipulate token prices and profit from slippage.

✅ Public Mempool Visibility

On Ethereum and similar blockchains, all pending transactions are broadcast to the public mempool before confirmation. Bots can scan these transactions freely, turning blockchain transparency into a double-edged sword that enables sandwich strategies.

✅ AMM-Based DEXs

Protocols using Automated Market Makers—such as Uniswap, SushiSwap, and PancakeSwap—are particularly exposed. Their deterministic pricing formulas can be predicted and gamed by bots.

❗Recognizing these risk factors helps users trade more safely and strategically. Up next: practical defenses to actively protect yourself against Sandwich Attacks.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM A SANDWICH ATTACK

While a Sandwich Attack exploits the transparency and automation of DeFi systems, traders can adopt proactive strategies to significantly reduce their exposure. Below are proven techniques widely used by security-conscious DeFi participants:

Lower Your Slippage Tolerance Adjusting your slippage settings to a tighter range limits how much the execution price can shift. For most swaps, keeping slippage between 0.1%–0.5% is sufficient. This narrower margin reduces the attacker’s profit window, making your trade less appealing to target.

Split Large Trades into Smaller Ones If you’re planning a high-value swap, consider breaking it down into several smaller trades. This minimizes the price impact of each order and reduces the incentive for MEV bots to attack. Smaller trades are less noticeable and often bypass front-running.

Trade in High-Liquidity Pools Choose pools with deep liquidity whenever possible. Greater liquidity dilutes the impact of any single trade, making price manipulation harder and less profitable for attackers.

Use Private Transactions or MEV Blockers Services like Flashbots Protect allow you to route trades through private mempools, shielding them from public visibility and MEV bots. Many wallets and DEXs now integrate MEV-protection toggles or relays, giving users an extra layer of safety.

Be Strategic with Gas Fees Bots often prey on low-gas transactions since they’re easier to front-run. By manually setting competitive gas fees, you increase the likelihood of faster confirmation, reducing the window of opportunity for attackers.
