Bitcoin

On December 5, 2024, Bitcoin reached a historic milestone by crossing the $100,000 mark, a moment that underscored its growing acceptance and resilience in the global financial landscape. This unprecedented surge was driven by a combination of factors, including increased investor confidence following the approval of Bitcoin Spot ETFs, favourable regulatory shifts, and the re-election of a pro-crypto U.S. President, Donald Trump. His administration's promises to establish America as the "crypto capital of the world" and introduce initiatives like the "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve" fueled market enthusiasm. Bitcoin's rally symbolized a new era of mainstream adoption, further solidifying its position as the leading digital asset.

What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin, commonly abbreviated as BTC and symbolized by ₿, is the pioneering decentralized cryptocurrency. Created in 2008 by the mysterious entity Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin emerged as a groundbreaking digital currency independent of traditional financial institutions. Its official journey began in 2009 with open-source software that allowed users to transact without intermediaries. By 2021, Bitcoin gained significant recognition when El Salvador adopted it as legal tender, a historic milestone.

How Bitcoin Works?

Bitcoin operates on a peer-to-peer network secured through cryptography. Transactions are recorded on a decentralized ledger called the blockchain, maintained by a consensus mechanism known as "mining." This process validates transactions but demands substantial computing power, raising concerns about its environmental impact.

The Bitcoin domain was registered in August 2008, followed by the release of a whitepaper outlining its vision on October 31, 2008. On January 3, 2009, Nakamoto mined the genesis block, embedding a critique of traditional banking systems within it. Early supporters, including Hal Finney and Nick Szabo, played a vital role in Bitcoin’s development, which Nakamoto eventually entrusted to Gavin Andresen before stepping back in 2010.

Key milestones include its first commercial use in 2010 when two pizzas were purchased for 10,000 BTC and the introduction of institutional products like Bitcoin futures and ETFs. These innovations fueled adoption, but price swings have been influenced by regulatory changes, environmental critiques, and macroeconomic factors.
