Gary Gensler, the current chair of the SEC, might soon be dismissed by President Trump, who previously hinted at significant alterations during the Bitcoin 2024 event. After years of attempting to regulate the cryptocurrency industry through sanctions, Gensler appears to be nearing the end of his tenure. Recently, he made his latest statements regarding cryptocurrencies, raising speculation about whether he indicated any intentions to resign.

While this article was being prepared, Bitcoin (BTC) saw a rapid decline, dropping to $88,234, which caused losses of up to 8% for various altcoins. Despite attempts to reach all-time highs, such pullbacks are not surprising. In the following hours, we might observe further movements into price regions that could trigger significant liquidations, particularly in futures trading.
Returning to Gensler’s comments, he reiterated at the 56th Annual Securities Regulation Institute hosted by the Practical Law Institute that he believes most cryptocurrencies qualify as securities.

“To put this into perspective, excluding Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins, the rest of this market is approximately $600 billion.”

Regarding ETH, Gensler had previously made neutral comments but included it alongside BTC in his recent speech.

Will Gensler Resign?

Trump has stated his intention to dismiss Gensler, and sources suggest that Gensler may follow the precedent of resigning after elections, like other leaders. However, he could still remain a commission member at the SEC. His recent statements seemed reminiscent of a farewell address, particularly as they were among the first following the elections.

“Serving alongside them, doing the people’s work, and ensuring our capital markets remain the best in the world has been a tremendous honor. I have been proud to work alongside my colleagues at the SEC every day to protect American families in our financial highways.”

Given Trump’s clear promise to dismiss Gensler as part of his campaign, this decision is forthcoming. He has pledged to appoint a candidate more friendly to cryptocurrencies, and this issue will soon be clarified as Trump and his team reveal names for significant public positions, including the SEC.
