<p>Coinbase, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchange platforms, recently announced the launch of cbBTC, a new wrapped Bitcoin token designed to compete with BitGo’s wBTC on Ethereum. This cbBTC is designed to operate on the layer 2 blockchain incubated by Coinbase, called Base.</p>

<p>cbBTC is an ERC-20 token that represents an equal amount of Bitcoin held in reserve by <a href="https://www.cointribune.com/en/crypto-coinbase-transforms-the-european-economy-and-the-euro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Coinbase</a>. This process, known as “wrapping”, allows BTC to be used on blockchains other than the one for which it was originally designed.
