<p>Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market cap, reached a new all-time high of $69,200 this week in a surge that once again highlighted the asset's extreme volatility. The record-breaking price level was short-lived however, as Bitcoin swiftly plunged back down to around $64,600 where it currently remains.</p>
<p>The catalyst for Bitcoin's latest rally appears to be a spike in buying from institutional investors, particularly into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Fidelity, one of the largest asset managers, reported purchasing over $404 million worth of the Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) on Monday alone. This represented a massive increase from just $50 million purchased on the previous Friday.</p>

<p>The involvement of major players like Fidelity has been seen as driving demand and lending legitimacy to Bitcoin as a reserve asset. However, critics point to the cryptocurrency's wild price swings as evidence that it lacks the stability to be considered a true store of value. Within a matter of hours, Bitcoin's price surged over 10% to reach a new peak before crashing back down over 6%.</p>
<p>Despite the recent volatility, Bitcoin has still experienced a remarkable year. It began 2023 trading around $16,500 and has gained over 300% since then. Much of the runup has been attributed to increasing adoption by institutional investors and corporations adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets as a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation.</p>
<p>Whether Bitcoin manages to sustain its upward trajectory or if this was just another speculative mania remains to be seen. For now, the initial promise of Bitcoin as a decentralized currency has transformed into a speculative asset subject to the same irrational exuberance as stocks and other tradable securities. Its future as an alternative to fiat currencies hangs in the balance.</p>
