In Daejeon, South Korea, a routine audit by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security has revealed a startling discovery: two government servers were infected with crypto mining malware. This breach, uncovered in the city’s information system, represents a significant cyber threat. One server functioned as a transit point for hacking, intensifying the security concerns, according to <a href="https://bnnbreaking.com/finance-nav/cryptocurrency/crypto-mining-malware-found-on-government-servers-in-daejeon-south-korea/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bnnbreaking</a>.
The city's cyber response team, upon detecting unusual activities, acted swiftly within eight days. They isolated the network and reported the breach to the National Intelligence Service (NIS). However, the auditors noted a critical gap: the absence of comprehensive security measures that could have prevented such a breach.
The audit further revealed that several servers in the city had not undergone mandatory annual diagnostic checks, exposing a weakness in the city’s cybersecurity defenses. This incident echoes a similar case from 2021 in Seoul, where a government employee exploited city resources to mine Ethereum under a prestigious opera house.
In response, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security has directed the Daejeon Mayoral Office to strengthen its security protocols to safeguard against future threats. This incident underscores the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive government data and infrastructure against the rising tide of cyberattacks, particularly in the realm of cryptocurrency mining.
