In a notable shift, Luke Dashjr, a key figure in Bitcoin Core development and a vocal critic of Ordinals, seems to have softened his stance on the NFT-like assets. Ocean, a <a href="https://ultramining.com/en/ratings/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mining pool</a> company backed by Jack Dorsey, announced a significant update allowing miners to choose whether to process Bitcoin blocks containing non-financial transactions, including the controversial Ordinals, according to <a href="https://decrypt.co/210662/bitcoin-ordinals-critic-caves-jack-dorsey-backed-ocean-mining-pool-flips-inscriptions" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Decrypt</a>.
This move comes as Bitcoin prices soar, with a remarkable 20-month high of over $44,000. The inclusion of Ordinals, digital assets inscribed on Bitcoin's smallest unit, the satoshi, has sparked debate within the Bitcoin community. While some have labeled these inscriptions as "spam," they have generated substantial fees for miners.
Ocean's policy shift is a direct response to the growing demand and popularity of Ordinals, which accounted for 55% of Bitcoin transactions in the past week. Despite Dashjr's initial opposition, labeling Ordinals as spam and suggesting filtering them out, the mining pool's new stance reflects a broader acceptance of these NFT-like assets within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
According to Ocean, the goal is to decentralize Bitcoin block template construction, giving miners more control over the blocks they mine. This update offers three block template policy options, with varying degrees of inclusion for financial and non-financial transactions.
The change has been met with mixed reactions. Some view it as a victory for Ordinals supporters, while others see it as a strategic move by Dashjr and Ocean to remain relevant in the evolving crypto landscape. With over 50 million inscriptions made since January, including those tied to <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-miners-score-big-with-184-million-revenue-amid-brc-20-token-boom-and-ordinals-protocol/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BRC-20</a> tokens, this development signals a significant shift in the Bitcoin mining community's approach to blockchain transactions.
