Cryptopia

Creating a game on a blockchain is a challenging endeavor that requires extensive experience in software and game development, along with a deep understanding of blockchain technology. In this exclusive interview article, we explore the captivating world of <a href="https://twitter.com/HendrikBonnet" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Frank Bonnet</a>, the mind behind Cryptopia. Together, we will explore his background, the development of Cryptopia, and the formidable obstacles he encountered while bringing this groundbreaking blockchain metaverse to life.
<h3 id="frank-bonnet-s-background-from-netherlands-to-blockchain">Frank Bonnet's Background: From Netherlands to Blockchain</h3>
Frank Bonnet has made Thailand his home for more than ten years now. At age 23, he became an accomplished professional software engineer, building up vast expertise in developing diverse applications using .NET before exploring Ethereum in 2016. This ultimately led him to explore blockchain technology further as he acquired invaluable knowledge that allowed him to refine his coding skills.
In his own words, Frank explains, "I've had a lot of experience building all kinds of applications in .NET. Our previous company specialized in advertising software for the Netherlands' automotive industry and related insurance services. In 2016 I started playing around with Ethereum, and since then, I've had the pleasure of working solely on blockchain projects."
<h3 id="the-genesis-of-cryptopia-a-dream-takes-shape">The Genesis of Cryptopia: A Dream Takes Shape</h3>
Frank's inspiration for creating Cryptopia stemmed from his early adoption of Ethereum and his foray into developing smart contracts using Solidity.
Recalling that period, Frank shares, "So what I did was; I wrote a few smart contracts that helped numerous projects to launch their tokens and make governance decisions using a DAO, that I wrote the code for as well."
<h3 id="the-essence-of-cryptopia-a-decentralized-metaverse-game">The Essence of Cryptopia: A Decentralized Metaverse Game</h3>
Cryptopia is a decentralized metaverse game inspired by Bitcoin, designed to function without relying on centralized servers. Unlike other blockchain games, Cryptopia offers active gameplay elements that allow users ample opportunities to earn rewards while participating.
Explaining his vision for Cryptopia, Frank states, "I'm a big fan of the Civilization series, so I wanted to make something similar on a blockchain. I started building and named the game; Civilizations Unchained.
Soon after, <a href="https://twitter.com/hansleek007" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Hans</a> (Hansco Leek, Co-Founder) got enthusiastic, and after almost a year of solo coding, <a href="https://twitter.com/KoeneToine" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Toine</a> (Toine Koene, Web-Developer/Concept Manager) got involved. We started brainstorming about the name and whether there could be a concept that would be more casual and appeal to more people. That's when I noticed the domain name <a href="https://cryptopia.com" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cryptopia.com</a> for sale."
He adds, "But that's like a loaded name, right? If you have a new brand that you have to teach people about, it takes so much effort before they remember you top of mind. It would be easier to change people's minds about a name they already know with a fantastic product rather than starting with a name from scratch. That's why we went with Cryptopia."
<h3 id="the-advantages-of-cryptopia-a-level-playing-field">The Advantages of Cryptopia: A Level Playing Field</h3>
While players with more significant assets possess advantages in Cryptopia, Frank underscores the inherent fairness of the system. Keep in mind that Cryptopia is an economic game that emphasizes aspects of the blockchain, including finite resources and scarcity.
In Cryptopia, we identify two types of players; the wealthy Tycoon player, who invests resources, and the Adventurer player, who invests time. When a tycoon player contributes funds, they do not pay the organization behind Cryptopia. Instead, they contribute to the continued growth of the ecosystem by providing access points (rewards) for new players who may not be able or willing to invest their funds initially.
Frank explains, "Like in real life, people have better chances when they have more assets. That's not something that we try to change necessarily. What we do change is the beneficiaries of the proceeds. Instead of paying the game developers, who then pay big tech/advertising companies, the funds are automatically used to create opportunities for new or less wealthy players, reinforcing the system. And because Cryptopias game-state resides on the blockchain completely, it's verifiably tamper-proof."
<h3 id="creating-opportunities-in-cryptopia-fun-earning-and-collaboration">Creating Opportunities in Cryptopia: Fun, Earning, and Collaboration</h3>
Cryptopia stands apart from other blockchain games by offering engaging gameplay and opportunities for players to actively participate and earn rewards in a unique, free-to-play-and-earn model. Unlike games centered solely on purchasing and holding non-fungible tokens (NFTs) representing land, e.g., Cryptopia aims to provide an immersive experience. Frank explains that players seeking to construct buildings, for instance, must involve other players with specific skills and compensate them for their contributions. This dynamic fosters collaboration and generates new avenues for players to thrive within the Cryptopia universe.
Why should you go solo when you can make connections with other players? Cryptopia's gameplay rules prioritize collaboration and encourage users to tap into each other's specific skills, such as building construction. In this regard, players can compensate one another for their unique contributions towards their shared goals — building a stronger Cryptopia community. Describing his approach, Frank affirms, "Let's say that I want to construct a building. I can't do it myself; I need other players who have construction skills. And I'm willing to spend resources on it; this is my business model. I will allow 10 or 20 other players to earn from constructing my building. That's the beauty of Cryptopia. Players create opportunities for other players."
<h3 id="the-revolutionary-cryptopia-wallet-security-and-convenience">The Revolutionary Cryptopia Wallet: Security and Convenience</h3>
Cryptopia introduces a revolutionary wallet embedded within the game engine, prioritizing security and convenience. The built-in and stand-alone Cryptopia wallet enables users to own a single wallet with multiple devices, providing added security measures comparable to two-factor authentication (2FA). This approach minimizes the risk of losing all assets if one device is compromised. Moreover, users can co-own a wallet with other players, fostering partnerships and shared ownership.
Frank explains the benefits of the Cryptopia wallet, saying, "When you compare it to your regular browser wallet, it's safer. It allows you to own one wallet with multiple devices. It gives you 2FA. It means you don't lose everything when one device is compromised because the chances of both devices getting compromised are much smaller. You can also own a wallet with multiple players. You and your life partner could even co-own a wallet. The Cryptopia wallet is the first ever built inside a game engine that allows for frictionless blockchain gaming."
Frank continues, "With our wallet, we deliver a strategy where people won't need to buy crypto. We sell the game to you for a dollar. You get $1.00 worth of gas in your account to start with. Because it's free-to-play-and-earn, you start earning. And some of those earnings are allocated for gas. So you won't have to deposit crypto to pay gas fees ever. That makes it frictionless. You download the game, start playing like a regular game, and don't need anything else. Behind the scenes, the game signs transactions for you, submits them to the blockchain, and waits until they are complete."
<h3 id="the-key-ingredient-for-success-in-cryptopia-planning-and-immutability">The Key Ingredient for Success in Cryptopia: Planning and Immutability</h3>
Cryptopia's immutable blockchain nature makes every action players take permanently recorded and irreversible. As Frank Bonnet underlines, this highlights the importance of planning ahead before making any choices or actions within the game. "It's planning. The nature of blockchain is its immutability. Every choice and action you make is forever; we try our best to highlight that. So whether you become a pirate, for example, you know that you can never go back to not being a pirate. I want the game to highlight the aspects of blockchain, which makes it different from other games. New players should think carefully about the steps they take because every action is transparent, everyone can see what you did, and it's irreversible," he advises. The transparency of blockchain also means that all actions are visible to others, adding an extra layer of accountability and caution when playing.
Looking beyond its primary function as a game, Cryptopia presents an innovative idea — one that welcomes players into an open universe where collaboration thrives alongside earning potential and joyfulness. As Frank emphasizes: "Cryptopia is not simply another game — it represents an exceptional opportunity to explore the full capabilities of blockchain technology while being part of something greater."
As the interview draws to a close, it becomes evident that Frank Bonnet's extraordinary vision for Cryptopia extends far beyond creating a blockchain game — it's ultimately creating new frontiers in blockchain gaming.
As Cryptopia continues to evolve and capture the imagination of players worldwide, it serves as a testament to the limitless possibilities that arise when visionary developers like Frank Bonnet push the boundaries of technology. Cryptopia is not merely a game; it represents a paradigm shift, inviting players into a decentralized world where collaboration, earning potential, and fun coexist in harmony.
