Southeast Asia, I had an interesting conversation with our former boss when we had a reunion with our ex-colleagues.He said that he noticed that I was very active on Facebook and Twitter. While he enjoyed my posts and tweets, he said he was wondering how I was able to do that the whole day. What was my job, he asked.“Oh, that’s part of my job. Posting on Facebook and Twitter,” I said.He gave me an incredulous look – this was over a decade ago, after all – and said, “No, I mean what’s your real job? The one that pays the bills. It can’t be posting on Facebook and Twitter, right?”It was then that our former CTO chimed in and said, “Actually, Joey is getting paid a lot of money to post on Facebook and Twitter.”Which made our former CEO’s jaw drop.The funny thing is that prior to Yahoo!, I was working for the biggest online game publisher in the Philippines. So, yes, you could say that I was getting paid to play games and talk about them on our online show. Moreover, the people I worked with also had jobs that were unheard of only a few years back. Like game moderator, or community manager.Think of how different the world was before the web became mainstream. How dramatically the web changed the way we work and play.Well, the same thing will happen with web3, which is disrupting different industries, including gaming.I’m a big believer in the metaverse, and the new jobs that it will create. The man who coined the term “metaverse” itself, renowned science fiction author Neal Stephenson, shared his thoughts on building the metaverse and the future of virtual reality. He <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/0ecab009-6543-4386-b936-0eecc9293d2e" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">defined the metaverse</a> as follows:“There’s lots of people in it. You can interact with them in real time, no matter where they are. They’re represented by audiovisual bodies called avatars, and they’re having shared experiences that are fictional in nature. They’re in fictional spaces, doing fictional things.“It’s not all one unified walled garden. There are different bits of it that are created and maintained by different people and the central metaphor for going from one of those experiences to another is movement through a virtual space. So there’s a map and experiences have fixed locations on that map. You might teleport, you might move very quickly, but there’s always a sense that you’re in an agreed-upon specific location in a larger universe.”As that article noted, clearly we are still a long way from actually creating the metaverse, as defined by Stephenson. Stephenson was also part of a panel at the <a href="https://www.weforum.org/events/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">World Economic Forum 2023</a> meeting in Davos, where the metaverse was a hot topic.After the meeting, WEF <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/02/metaverse-use-cases-industrial-consumer-enterprise/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">published this article</a> explaining the three main ways we use the term “metaverse”.“‘If we are going to have a metaverse being used and enjoyed by millions of people, there will have to be experiences in the metaverse that are worth having," said Stephenson.“There are three broad categories for the ‘use cases’ of the metaverse, according to Accenture’s Chief Technology Officer Paul Daugherty: consumer, enterprise and industrial.”How long will it actually take for the metaverse to become mainstream? Here’s what an <a href="https://knowledge.insead.edu/marketing/cutting-through-metaverse-hype" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">INSEAD article</a> has to say.“Software professionals predict mainstream adoption will take anywhere from three to 10 years, and that early adoption will predominantly come from enterprise and Gen Z users. Many believe adoption will take place in a phased approach, with AR reaching the masses first as the hardware for VR and haptic technology progresses."“On the other hand, hardware professionals estimate it will take 10 to 15 years before the metaverse goes mainstream. Key reasons include high costs and timelines of R&amp;D, less availability of funding for hardware start-ups and development required across the technology ecosystem – including infrastructure, streaming, graphics processing and headset size.”If that makes you impatient, think about how long it took for the internet to become mainstream.In web3, we are fond of saying that we’re early. And, yes, we truly are, because this stage of web3 can be compared to the web during the late 90s and early 2000s.The reality, however, is that technology will improve dramatically, and continue disrupting whole industries.Technology will create new jobs, and also render some jobs obsolete. That’s just how it’s been throughout history.Whether it will take three to 10 years, or 10-15 years, what’s important is for companies and individuals to already prepare for a world where metaverse jobs will be mainstream. It’s the future of work, and we can’t afford to ignore it.HR, in fact, will <a href="https://www.hrexchangenetwork.com/hr-tech/interviews/metaverse-guru-explains-the-new-world-to-hr" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">need to evolve</a> to adapt to the metaverse.“HR professionals will have to re-think the very concept of work with the emergence of virtual worlds with open economies.
