<p>Google reduces headcount by 12,000 employees, or around 6% of its workforce, becoming the latest tech corporation to implement layoff amid the economic boom as the epidemic wanes.</p><p>CEO of Google’s parent firm, Alphabet, Sundar Pichai sent an email to Google employees on Friday informing them of the layoffs. The email was also posted on the business’s news site.</p><h2 id="header-0">‘Google hired for different economic reality’</h2><p>“Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” Pichai wrote.</p><p>Pichai stated the decision is a result of the business’s “rigorous review” of its operations.</p><p>“To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices. So, we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company,” he <a href="https://blog.google/inside-google/message-ceo/january-update/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">stated in the email</a>.</p><h2 id="header-1">Not the only one who reduces headcount</h2><p>It was also revealed in the blog post that Google employees in the US who are affected have already received an email of the business’s decision, while for those in other countries, it is still in the process because of “local laws and practices”.</p><p>Regulatory documents demonstrate how Google’s staff increased throughout the epidemic, from 119,000 at the end of 2019 to approximately 187,000 by the end of 2018.</p><p>The layoff is one of the company’s largest, and it joins tens of thousands of other job cuts lately led by <a href="https://micky.com.au/meta-partners-with-microsoft-to-bring-office-365-to-metaverse/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Microsoft, Facebook parent Meta,</a> Amazon, and other internet giants.</p><p>This month alone, at least 48,000 job layoffs have been reported by big corporations in the industry.</p>
