The awards were given to local authorities to recognize their achievements in employing digital technology to tackle local challenges.
The Japanese cabinet secretariat recently used non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as an additional incentive during a ceremony to recognize local authorities that succeeded in a digitization competition.
According to reports, four technology companies funded this year’s award ceremony. This includes Tomonari Kogei, Tree Digital Studio, Bitflyer Holdings, and Indiesquare.
As noted in the report, the NFTs were issued and distributed using Indiesquare’s low-cost blockchain technology, the Hazama Base. Previously, the platform was utilized to issue and distribute NFTs during a Liberal Democratic Party Youth Bureau event.
The award ceremony, known as the 2022 Summer Digi Denkoshien, was organized to commemorate and acknowledge local authority initiatives. The authorities were recognized for using digital technology to address local challenges and boost their appeal.
Despite the fact that the tokens were released on the Ethereum blockchain, the paper indicates that the NFTs utilized the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) technology. These tokens are non-transferable yet easy to use for remembrance and verification.
Meanwhile, another report has revealed that the NFT awards were given to a total of nine mayors. Among the dignitaries in attended the event was Japanese PM Fumio Kishida.
