Nym addresses a critical gap in online privacy: metadata leakage. While encryption hides content, metadata—such as communication patterns, timing, and social connections—can reveal your identity and activities. Nym's core mission is to provide "network-level privacy against mass surveillance" (Nym).

This is achieved through a decentralized mixnet, which shuffles and delays internet traffic packets among multiple nodes. This process, combined with cover traffic, makes it extremely difficult for adversaries to perform traffic analysis, offering stronger anonymity than traditional VPNs or Tor.
