Pi Network and Pi Day are linked because the project officially launched on Pi Day, March 14, 2019.
The date 3/14 matches the first digits of the math constant π (3.14), the same constant the project shares its name with. Since then, the Pi Core Team has used every March 14 to mark the network's anniversary and release major updates. It also holds a second yearly event, Pi2Day, on June 28, because 2π is about 6.28.

What Is Pi Day And Why Did Pi Network Launch On It?

Pi Day is an informal math holiday held on March 14 each year, because the U.S. date format 3/14 matches π's first three digits.
Pi Network was founded by Stanford graduates Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis and Dr. Chengdiao Fan. In December 2018, the team listed an early test version of the app, called an alpha prototype, on major app stores. On March 14, 2019, it published the original Pi Whitepaper and marked that day as the official launch.
The project was built around mobile mining. Instead of using costly hardware, users, called Pioneers, open the app once a day to earn Pi. Early features included:

Daily check-ins to keep a mining session active

Referral Teams that reward users for inviting others

Security Circles, small groups of trusted contacts that help secure the network

From 3.14 To 6.28: The Pi2Day Tradition

Pi Network later added Pi2Day on June 28. The date comes from 6.28, which is roughly two times π. The two dates now split the project's year into two release windows, about three and a half months apart.

How Has Pi Network Used Pi Day Over The Years?

Pi Day has worked as a fixed checkpoint on Pi Network's roadmap. Key dates include:

March 14, 2019: Official launch and whitepaper. By June 2019, the network had 100,000 active Pioneers.

March 14, 2020: The Testnet phase began, letting developers test the blockchain and its consensus algorithm, the rules nodes use to agree on transactions.

December 28, 2021: The Enclosed Mainnet went live. The blockchain ran, but a firewall blocked connections to outside exchanges and wallets.

February 20, 2025: The Open Network launched. The firewall came down, and PI could be traded on external exchanges for the first time.

Not every major milestone landed on Pi Day. Both mainnet launches came on other dates.

Pi Day 2026: Seventh Anniversary

On March 14, 2026, Pi Network marked its seventh anniversary with these releases:

Pi Launchpad on Testnet, a tool for launching new tokens in the Pi ecosystem

Second Mainnet migrations, rolled out gradually so Pioneers can move more mined Pi from the app to the live blockchain

Network upgrades to version 19.9 on March 1 and version 20.2 on March 13

Pi2Day 2026: Three New Tools

On June 28, 2026, the Core Team released three products:

SoloHost, which supports local AI and distributed computing through the Node network

Pi Sign-in, which lets third-party apps use Pi accounts for login

PiVerify, an identity verification service for outside businesses

What Has Pi Network Announced Since Pi2Day?

The most recent updates are technical and are scheduled for this month, well outside the two celebration dates.

Protocol 28 Goes Live On October 16

Pi Network has finished Protocol 27 on Mainnet and activated Protocol 28 on Testnet. Node operators must install version 28 by today, October 13, 2026, before Protocol 28 switches on for Mainnet on October 16. Coindoo reports that the upgrade focuses on transaction-data handling and app maintenance, so the immediate effect for PI holders should be limited.
Pi Network also says more than 417,000 accounts can resume KYC (Know Your Customer) identity checks, after reviews cleared earlier flags for possible duplicate accounts.

The OUSD Stablecoin Partnership

On October 8, Pi Network said it has partnered with Open Standard, the company behind the Open USD (OUSD) stablecoin, to explore payments and rewards. A stablecoin is a token designed to hold a steady value, usually one U.S. dollar. Pi Network confirmed there is no live integration yet, has not set a launch date, and says PI will remain the network's main asset.
A separate social media claim on October 10, saying a group called the RWA Foundation had listed Pi Network among blockchains for real-world assets, has no primary source and remains unverified.

Conclusion

Pi Network launched on Pi Day 2019 and has used March 14 and June 28 as its main release dates ever since. In 2026, those dates brought Pi Launchpad on Testnet, second Mainnet migrations, SoloHost, Pi Sign-in and PiVerify. Protocol 28 is set to activate on Mainnet on October 16, and PI traded at $0.08082 on October 13.
