If Satoshi Nakamoto still controls the Bitcoin believed to be linked to the network’s earliest mining period, Bitcoin’s creator could be one of the richest people alive without ever selling a single coin.
The exact number is impossible to prove with certainty, but blockchain researchers have long estimated that Satoshi mined roughly 1.1 million BTC. At Bitcoin prices near $80,000, that would imply a fortune of about $88 billion — enough to place the anonymous founder in the same conversation as the world’s wealthiest business magnates.
That wealth remains unusual for one simple reason: it appears to exist almost entirely on paper. How Satoshi Became One of Bitcoin’s Largest Holders
Bitcoin launched in January 2009, when there was almost no competition for block rewards and almost no obvious financial reason to mine. During that period, Satoshi is believed to have mined thousands of early blocks, accumulating a stash that still towers over most known individual holdings.
Coinpaper’s explainer on who Satoshi Nakamoto is outlines the mystery around Bitcoin’s founder, while a separate breakdown of how much Bitcoin Satoshi may have explains why most estimates cluster around 1.1 million BTC rather than a single exact figure.
That estimate is large enough to matter even in today’s institutional market. Coinpaper’s review of who owns the most Bitcoin in 2026 shows that Satoshi still appears as the largest single identified Bitcoin-holding entity when related wallets are grouped together. Why the Coins Still Matter Even Though They Never Move
The most fascinating part of Satoshi’s wealth is that it has never been meaningfully realized. No confirmed outgoing transaction from the attributed stash has ever established that Satoshi sold or spent the coins.
That dormancy is what separates Satoshi from a conventional billionaire. A founder like Jeff Bezos built wealth through stock that could be sold, borrowed against or pledged. Satoshi’s estimated fortune, by contrast, remains locked inside one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in finance.
The continued silence also shapes Bitcoin’s culture. Every time old Bitcoin wallets move again or a Satoshi-era wallet wakes up, traders immediately wonder whether the market is finally seeing signs of the creator’s return. So far, those episodes have involved other early holders, not confirmed Satoshi addresses. What Would Happen if Satoshi Ever Moved the Bitcoin
Even if Satoshi never sells the full stash, a single confirmed movement would likely send shockwaves through the market. It would challenge a long-standing assumption that these coins are effectively frozen, changing how investors think about Bitcoin’s circulating supply.
That is why dormant coins continue to influence debates far beyond price. Coinpaper recently explored what could happen if Satoshi-linked coins were ever reassigned or reactivated, highlighting how much symbolic and financial weight those wallets still carry.
