The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) greenlit applications from major stock exchanges to list Ether-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This surprise approval paves the way for trading these funds later in 2024, potentially bringing the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency into the mainstream financial arena.
The decision comes after months of uncertainty. This bipartisan support signifies a growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies within the traditional financial landscape.
The launch of Ether ETFs could attract a wider range of investors, including hedge funds, wealth advisors, and retail investors, who might be hesitant to directly invest in cryptocurrency markets. This increased accessibility could further propel the cryptocurrency industry into the mainstream.

However, the SEC’s decision to approve Ether ETFs raises questions about the agency’s ongoing classification of Ethereum as a security. Additionally, it’s important to note that unlike Bitcoin ETFs, these Ether ETFs will not offer staking yields. Staking, a core feature of the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to earn rewards for holding the cryptocurrency, was a sticking point for the SEC. The agency’s concerns about the legality of staking as a security offering remain unresolved. This raises questions about how these ETFs will track the price of Ether if they can’t participate in staking.
