Within 48 hours of the record Binance hack, three more incidents hit: BTCPay Server merchant wallets, Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin with $40M+ drained across 10 chains, and a suspected $106M theft from an unnamed EU firm. None is linked to Binance or to each other, yet together they raise one question: where is crypto actually safe? Data shared by Oopsy suggests a trend, not a blip: DefiLlama logged 325 hacks from January to October 2026, about 2.7x the same stretch of 2025, and recent cases failed at infrastructure — a laptop, a vendor script, a self-hosted server — not at any chain's consensus. To Italic Buterin, it always comes down to where the signing key lives. Exchanges offer recovery, as Tether's $4.5M USDT freeze showed; self-custody offers prevention, since an offline key can't be swept. The pushback comes from The Crypto Corner: neither full self-custody nor one trusted exchange solves it, and trust should rest on proven security, not a familiar brand. If the weak point is operational, is the real choice exchange versus self-custody, or online keys versus offline ones?
