In a significant strategic move for 2025, X has appointed cryptocurrency product design veteran Benji Taylor as its new head of design, a hire that directly precedes the early public launch of the platform’s ambitious financial application, X Money. This executive appointment, confirmed on March 15, 2025, signals X’s deepening commitment to integrating comprehensive financial services into its social media ecosystem under Elon Musk’s leadership. Consequently, Taylor’s extensive background in self-custody wallets and exchange design positions him as a pivotal figure for the platform’s next evolution.

X Head of Design Role Filled by Crypto Expert Benji Taylor

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has officially named Benji Taylor its head of design. The company announced the appointment this week. Taylor brings a specialized and highly relevant skillset to the role, having spent years at the forefront of user experience design for cryptocurrency and decentralized finance products. Previously, he founded Los Feliz Engineering, the development studio behind the self-custodial crypto wallet Family. Notably, Aave Labs, the developer of the leading DeFi protocol Aave, acquired this studio in 2023. Furthermore, Taylor served as the head of design for Coinbase’s layer-2 blockchain, Base, giving him direct experience with scaling blockchain applications for mainstream adoption.

His mandate at X will extend beyond the core social feed. According to internal communications, Taylor will lead design efforts across X’s portfolio, including collaborative projects with Elon Musk’s other ventures, xAI and SpaceX. This cross-company design leadership suggests a unified vision for user interfaces across Musk’s technological empire. The hiring decision arrives at a critical juncture, precisely as Musk publicly targets an April 2025 release for early access to X Money.

The Impending Launch of the X Money Financial App

The context for Taylor’s hiring is the imminent rollout of X Money, the platform’s long-anticipated financial services application. Elon Musk confirmed the timeline for a limited early access program in a post on the platform last week. This launch represents the most concrete step yet in Musk’s stated goal of transforming X into an “everything app” capable of handling payments, banking, and trading alongside communications. Industry analysts view the integration of financial tools as essential for X’s growth and monetization strategy.

Designing a secure, intuitive, and trustworthy financial interface presents unique challenges, especially within a platform historically focused on public conversation. Therefore, Taylor’s specific expertise in crypto product design is not incidental. Cryptocurrency applications demand a high standard for security transparency, complex transaction flows, and regulatory compliance communication—all skills directly transferable to building a mainstream financial app. His previous work on the Family wallet, which emphasized user-controlled private keys and clear asset management, aligns with the principles needed for a consumer-facing finance tool.

Expert Analysis on the Strategic Hire

Financial technology experts point to this hire as a clear signal of X’s product direction. “Bringing in a designer with Benji Taylor’s pedigree from the crypto and DeFi world is a definitive statement,” said Mariana Chen, a fintech analyst at Stanford University. “It indicates that X Money is likely to incorporate blockchain-based features or crypto asset management from the outset, rather than treating it as a later add-on. His experience at Coinbase’s Base also suggests an understanding of how to build for scale and low-cost transactions, which are critical for any payment app hoping to compete globally.”

The move also reflects a broader industry trend where social and messaging platforms increasingly embed financial services. Apps like WeChat in China have successfully pioneered this model for years. However, Western attempts have faced greater regulatory scrutiny and user skepticism regarding data privacy and financial security. Taylor’s design philosophy, rooted in the self-custody ethos of crypto, could be X’s answer to building trust. By prioritizing user control and clear data flows, the design team can potentially differentiate X Money from traditional banking apps.

Background and Implications for X’s Product Ecosystem

Benji Taylor’s career trajectory provides a roadmap for the design challenges ahead at X. After founding Los Feliz Engineering, he focused on creating user-friendly interfaces for managing digital assets without intermediaries. The acquisition by Aave Labs validated his team’s technical and design approach. Subsequently, his role at Coinbase’s Base involved designing for a layer-2 ecosystem meant to onboard millions of users to faster, cheaper blockchain transactions. This end-to-end experience—from individual wallet to scalable network—is exceptionally rare.

At X, his responsibilities will likely encompass several key areas immediately:

X Money Core Interface: Designing the primary user flow for account management, payments, and asset views.

Security and Onboarding: Creating clear, frictionless processes for identity verification and security setup, a major hurdle for financial apps.

Cross-Platform Integration: Ensuring the financial features feel native within the existing X feed and direct message experiences.

Collaborative Design Systems: Establishing visual and interaction guidelines that can be shared with xAI and SpaceX for future product synergies.

The table below outlines the potential design priorities for X Money based on Taylor’s background and industry standards:
