On November 4, 2026, hackers stole approximately $133 million from Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a major French banking group. The attackers did not break through the bank’s main security walls. Instead, they hacked into a smaller third-party service provider that worked for the bank.
Using this vendor’s trusted access, the criminals slipped into the bank’s internal systems, took control of corporate accounts, and wired millions of dollars to outside financial institutions. The bank confirmed the attack, stating that customer funds were not touched, but corporate money was taken.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT traced the stolen cash, showing that the criminals eventually laundered the fiat money through cryptocurrency platforms, hiding the funds in stablecoins, Ethereum, and Monero.
Social media users quickly broke down the mechanics of the robbery. Memecoin trader on X, @0xslit laughed at the irony of the situation, stating that even bank robbers trust cryptocurrency networks to hold their money more than they trust the traditional banking system.

A US stock trader and market analyst on X, @zuopun777 highlighted the clear timeline of the crime, noting that the traditional bank-to-bank transfers moved the money first, and the thieves only used digital coins at the very end to make their final escape.

@WuBlockchain Same pattern again: the bank’s own walls held, the third-party vendor’s didn’t. $133M left through normal bank-to-bank transfers first, and crypto only shows up at the very end as the exit.

The Arkéa robbery is just the latest disaster in an aggressive wave of cyberattacks hitting the French Republic. Over the past two years, the country has suffered some of the largest digital breaches in European history.
In February 2026, criminals hacked directly into FICOBA, the national bank account database run by the French government. That breach exposed the personal financial data of 1.2 million citizens. A few weeks later, attackers hit the government administrative service ANTS, compromising 11.7 million accounts.
Recently, in the private sector, an attack on the French email provider Alinto exposed 40 million metadata records. Because major global brands like L’Oréal, Carrefour, and Renault used Alinto to manage their communications, the hackers accessed their corporate data without ever touching the brands’ internal servers.
The largest hit occurred in 2024, when hackers breached France Travail, the national employment agency, exposing the personal data of 43 million people, more than half the population of the country. Criminals know that both the state and private businesses rely heavily on interconnected digital systems. When one piece of software fails, millions of people lose their privacy or, in the case of Arkéa, millions of dollars disappear completely.

How cybercriminals use cryptocurrency to move stolen money

The $133 million moved through standard, regulated bank-to-bank wire transfers first. The criminals only converted the stolen fiat money into digital coins at the end of the process.
They did this because the traditional banking system allows governments to freeze stolen money. If the criminals kept the $133 million inside a regular European or American bank account, law enforcement would call the bank manager and confiscate the funds. The thieves needed a way to pull the money completely out of the government’s physical reach.
The thieves took the stolen euros, sent them to digital exchanges, and bought privacy-focused tokens like Monero. Following the $133 million robbery, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa refused to reveal the name of the third-party vendor responsible for the breach. Large banks rely on these outside vendors to process payroll, route emails, or handle customer data; when a massive bank or business loses millions because of an outside software partner, they almost never announce the partner’s name. They hide the third party’s identity to protect their own daily operations. Also, publicly naming the weak link instantly invites massive class-action lawsuits against the bank itself.
In another development, French crypto platform Coinhouse has received authorization under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework through France’s financial regulator Autorité des Marchés Financiers, placing it among the early firms operating under the new European rulebook
