Ethereum Layer 2 network Blast has officially shut down, giving users until November 4, 2027, to recover remaining funds after its developers concluded that operating costs had made the blockchain financially unsustainable.
The closure, confirmed on November 4, follows a month-long wind-down that began in October, when Blast acknowledged that maintaining its infrastructure cost more than the revenue generated by the network.
Remaining ETH, wrapped ETH (WETH), USDB and eligible pending withdrawals can now be recovered through Blast’s official recovery portal, which processes claims directly through smart contracts on Ethereum mainnet.
The shutdown ends one of Ethereum’s most heavily promoted scaling projects, which attracted billions of dollars in deposits through native yield mechanisms and token incentives before experiencing a substantial decline in activity.

Blast announced its decision to wind down on October 2, acknowledging that its business model could no longer support the costs of operating an independent Layer 2 blockchain.
The team initially reduced withdrawal delays to 24 hours and gave users until October 26 to move assets through its standard interface. Withdrawals subsequently shifted to Ethereum-based bridge contracts as the network prepared to cease operations.
The new recovery portal allows users to check eligible balances by entering their wallet addresses, including funds associated with smart contract wallets and previously unfinished withdrawals.
Blast Mobile users must follow a separate recovery process because their original addresses do not exist directly on Ethereum. They can import their recovery phrases into compatible wallets such as MetaMask or Rabby before connecting to the claims system.
The recovery instructions also warn users against entering recovery phrases directly into websites, particularly as fraudulent migration services may attempt to exploit the shutdown.
Support for the claims process will remain available for 12 months, making November 4, 2027, the final announced recovery deadline.

Katana Takes Snapshot as Layer 2 Closures Accelerate

Blast launched in November 2023 after securing $20 million from investors including Paradigm and Standard Crypto. Its approach combined Ethereum scaling with native yields on ETH and stablecoin holdings, attracting substantial early deposits.
However, incentives and strong initial activity failed to translate into a sustainable long-term business.
The shutdown has also attracted attention from Katana, the DeFi-focused blockchain developed with support from Polygon Labs.
On October 26, Katana confirmed that it had captured a snapshot of Blast users and historical wallet activity, indicating that additional incentives could become available to participants active on its network.
Katana has not disclosed a distribution schedule, reward formula or guaranteed token airdrop. The snapshot therefore does not establish that former Blast users will receive compensation or new tokens.
The closure comes amid broader consolidation across Ethereum scaling networks.
In October, Abstract announced plans to shut down its Ethereum Layer 2 in December after struggling to establish sustainable economics despite attracting millions of wallets.
Earlier in 2026, Bitcoin Layer 2 project Botanix also announced its closure, reflecting similar challenges involving operating costs, liquidity and sustained application demand.
These closures highlight the financial pressures facing blockchain networks that rely on transaction fees and ecosystem activity to fund infrastructure, security and development.
For Blast, the focus has shifted entirely from network expansion to recovering remaining user funds. Although its blockchain operations have ended, the Ethereum-based claims system provides a defined withdrawal route through November 2027.
