Ethereum crypto developers could complete a post-quantum security transition by December 2028, according to researcher Justin Drake. He outlined the accelerated ambition at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on Nov. 3.
The proposed timetable leads the Ethereum Foundation’s December 2029 target by one year. However, Drake did not announce an approved schedule or a new protocol commitment.

<a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2026/11/03/ethereum-foundation-launches-digital-public-infrastructure/?amp=" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum Foundation</a> researcher Justin Drake announced the proposed timeline during Devcon 8’s opening ceremony in Mumbai.

The conference’s official X account shared his remarks, outlining an ambitious schedule for network development.
“Our hope is that by December 2028 we’ll be able to wrap up the full post-quantum and post-AI transition,” Drake said.
He added that developers had 24 months to deliver three additional network upgrades.
The statement placed Ethereum crypto security development on a potentially faster schedule than the foundation’s existing roadmap.
However, Drake did not announce a binding deadline or confirm approval of an accelerated development schedule.
The Ethereum Foundation published its existing protocol priorities on September 7, 2026.
Those priorities targeted December 2029 for <a href="https://blog.ethereum.org/2026/09/07/protocol-priorities" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">quantum resistance</a> across Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data layers.
The foundation also scheduled a reassessment of quantum computing progress for January 2027.
Consequently, the December 2028 proposal remains separate from the foundation’s formally published commitments.
<h2 id="h-ethereum-crypto-faces-quantum-computing-and-ai-security-risks" class="wp-block-heading">Ethereum Crypto Faces Quantum Computing and AI Security Risks</h2>
<a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2026/11/03/ethereum-foundation-launches-digital-public-infrastructure/?amp=" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum crypto developers </a>have increasingly focused on cryptographic vulnerabilities that advanced quantum computers could eventually exploit. Ethereum currently uses the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm to authenticate transactions from standard accounts.
Validators rely on Boneh-Lynn-Shacham signatures to verify network consensus and aggregate votes.
Both systems use mathematical techniques that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could potentially compromise.
Ethereum’s official security documentation identifies additional risks involving data commitments and zero-knowledge proof systems.
However, the foundation stated that existing quantum computers cannot break Ethereum’s cryptography. The immediate concern involves preparing the network before suitable quantum hardware becomes available.
Google Quantum AI published research in March 2026 examining the computing resources required to break elliptic-curve cryptography.
The research estimated that attacking 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography could require approximately 1,200 logical qubits.
That estimate reinforced concerns about the time available for developing and deploying replacement security systems. Meanwhile, Drake’s reference to post-AI security introduced another consideration for Ethereum crypto researchers.
Artificial intelligence could influence future attack capabilities, although the precise threat model remains unclear. His Devcon remarks did not establish that existing AI systems could compromise Ethereum’s cryptographic signatures.
<h2 id="h-ethereum-developers-prepare-three-network-upgrades" class="wp-block-heading">Ethereum Developers Prepare Three Network Upgrades</h2>
The Ethereum Foundation established a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team in January 2026. Thomas Coratger leads the team, which coordinates research into alternative cryptographic systems and protocol security.
The foundation has also supported development of leanXMSS, a hash-based signature system for Ethereum validators.
Unlike current validator signatures, leanXMSS relies on cryptographic hash functions rather than elliptic-curve assumptions.
Developers are pairing this technology with leanVM, a verification system designed to aggregate larger post-quantum signatures.
Ethereum crypto researchers also identified leanSPHINCS as a proposed solution for transaction authentication. The foundation’s roadmap outlined several milestones for introducing these technologies across different network layers.
An initial public-key registry would allow validators to register post-quantum keys alongside existing credentials.
Subsequent upgrades would introduce additional signature verification capabilities and more advanced consensus protections.
However, the foundation acknowledged that coordinating multiple network upgrades presented implementation and testing challenges.
Its September roadmap called for parallel development involving researchers, client teams, cryptographers, and security reviewers.
<h2 id="h-what-the-2028-timeline-means-for-eth-crypto-holders" class="wp-block-heading">What the 2028 Timeline Means for ETH Crypto Holders</h2>
For ETH crypto holders, the transition raises questions about wallet security and future account migration.
Ethereum’s security documentation explained that previously used accounts expose public keys through transaction signatures.
Those public keys could become vulnerable if quantum computers eventually overcome existing cryptographic protections. However, the foundation has not identified an immediate quantum attack capable of compromising user funds.
Ethereum crypto developers are exploring account abstraction to support alternative transaction authentication methods. Ethereum Improvement Proposal 8141 would allow accounts to adopt different signature verification systems.
Such flexibility could help wallet providers introduce quantum-resistant authentication without requiring simultaneous migration.
Nevertheless, implementing these protections across the wider network would require additional development and testing.
The foundation’s January 2027 roadmap reassessment now represents an important milestone for evaluating the accelerated proposal.
Until developers approve a revised schedule, December 2029 remains the foundation’s published quantum-resistance target.
