Play-to-earn NFT games promised something simple in 2021. Play a game, collect rewards, and earn crypto. Then token prices fell, player numbers shrank, and many titles went quiet.
By November 2026, the question has changed. Readers no longer ask which game pays the most. They ask which play-to-earn NFT games are still running at all.

What Do the Common Terms Actually Mean?

Crypto gaming borrows a lot of jargon. A few definitions make the rest easier to follow.

Play-to-earn: A model where in-game activity can produce tokens or NFTs that hold market value outside the game.

NFT:Short fornon-fungible token, a one-of-a-kind digital item whose ownership is recorded on a blockchain. In games it usually shows up as a character, a trading card, or even a plot of virtual land.

Token: A digital asset that lives on a blockchain. Many games run two of them, with one handed out as everyday rewards and the other kept for premium features.

Wallet:An app that holds a player’s tokens and NFTs and approves transactions on their behalf with a digital signature.

Free-to-play: A game that lets anyone start playing straight away, with no purchase needed up front.

Play-and-own: A newer label for blockchain games that puts the ownership of in-game items ahead of the idea of earning an income from them.

Sidechain: A blockchain connected to a larger blockchain but not part of it, designed to handle transactions faster and at a lower cost than on the main network.

How Did Play-to-Earn NFT Games Change After the 2021 Boom?

The first wave rewarded repetition. Players ground out tokens and sold them. New buyers kept the loop alive. When new money slowed, rewards lost value.
Many early projects never recovered. Several closed. Others survived with smaller communities and redesigned economies.
Today's play-to-earn NFT games usually lead with gameplay. Earning is pitched as a side benefit. Free entry points are also more common than in 2021.
That shift matters. A game that depends only on rewards tends to empty out when rewards shrink. A game people enjoy can survive a weak token market.

Three titles stand out because their official channels still describe live products. The table below summarizes what each project states about itself.

Project descriptions are not proof of player numbers. Official pages confirm that a product exists. They do not confirm how many people play it.

Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity's official site presents the game as a creature-battling title built by Sky Mavis. It runs on Ronin, a sidechain created for gaming.
The project introduced Origins mode as a lighter way in. Players can start without buying NFTs. Earning features still tie closely to owning Axies and holding the AXS and SLP tokens.
Ronin also carries history. In March 2022, an attack on its bridge drained more than $600 million in crypto. The network has kept operating since, yet the event remains a reference point for security risk.

God's Unchained

The Gods Unchained website describes a tactical card game from the studio Immutable. Cards exist as NFTs, so players can trade them.
The GODS token supports the economy around the game. The title can be downloaded for free.
Its appeal is familiarity. Card battlers are easy to grasp, and the ownership layer sits on top rather than replacing the game.

Pixels

The Pixels official website describes a social farming and exploration game on Ronin. The project moved there from another network, and the PIXEL token launched in early 2024.
According to the project's published tokenomics, PIXEL has a total supply of 5 billion tokens. The bulk goes to ecosystem rewards released linearly over five years.
Total supply means every token that will ever exist. Circulating supply is only what trades today. The gap between the two matters for price pressure.
The project also describes an off-chain currency for basic activities, which keeps entry free.

What About Other Titles Often Mentioned?

Several larger names appear in nearly every active-games discussion. These include Illuvium, The Sandbox, Decentraland, and Star Atlas.
Some are virtual worlds built around land NFTs rather than classic earning games. Star Atlas is widely described as still in development. Readers tracking GameFi tokens will notice that "active" means very different things across these projects.
Official release notes should settle the question for each one. This article does not rate titles it could not verify directly.

How Can Readers Check That a Game Is Really Active?

Marketing pages stay online long after products fade. A few checks work better:

Recent update posts on the official blog or documentation.

A game client that can still be downloaded and run.

Trades on the official marketplace or the game's block explorer.

Consistent team communication over several months.

Token utility described in official docs, not only in social posts.

A block explorer is a public website that lists blockchain transactions. It is the closest thing to a live receipt.
Earlier coverage of NFT games with real activity applies the same test to a wider list. Active does not mean profitable, though. A busy game can still pay very little.

What Are the Main Risks of Play-to-Earn NFT Games?

Risk is built into the model. Rewards are tokens, and token prices can fall fast.

Price swings:Earned tokens may be worth far less by the time they are sold.

NFT liquidity:An item listed for sale may find no buyer.

Security:Fake download pages and wallet-draining scams keep going after newcomers, and the Ronin bridge attack proved just how costly a single weak link between chains can turn out to be.

Supply pressure: Many projects release locked tokens on a fixed schedule, so each unlock can quietly add fresh supply to the market and weigh on the price over time.

Regulation:Countries treat crypto rewards in different ways, and since the rules are still being written, a payout that is fine today may be taxed or restricted tomorrow.

Timecost: Hours of play could earn less than expected.

Players usually need a crypto wallet to take part, so basic wallet safety is part of the entry cost.

Is Play-to-Earn Still the Right Label?

The label is fading. Many active titles now describe themselves around ownership, community, or gameplay. Income is no longer the headline.
That change looks healthy. Games built for fun have a better chance of keeping players after rewards fall. Even so, play-to-earn NFT games remain a useful category, because earning features still shape how these economies work.
Coverage of the best play-to-earn games often misses the simplest test. Does the game keep players when rewards are small?

Conclusion

Play-to-earn NFT games have not vanished, but they have changed. Axie Infinity, Gods Unchained and Pixels all describe live products on their official sites. Each leans on gameplay first and rewards second.
What stays uncertain is real player activity, since official pages rarely publish verified numbers.
Token prices, token unlock schedules, and security history also deserve a close look. Before any money or time goes into a project, it makes sense to go through its latest updates, look at how its wallets are moving on the blockchain, and read the tokenomics document to see how tokens are shared out and released.
